Usually, these things are made so you can't mess it up by "keying" the connection. I'll assume the connection is broken since your asking. the positive (+) output (usually red) is plugged to the Positive side of the automotive circuit and the Negative (-) output (usually black) is connected to chassis ground or the negative side of the automotive circuit.
If its not clear what side is positive and negative, you should take it to a professional that will do a good job and has more knowledge.

How do you change an alternator belt on a 92 Dodge Caravan?
I have a 1990 Dodge Spirit with the same engine in it... now you will need to jack the passenger side of the car up, and when you get under it look at the side of the engine that is closest to the passenger side wheel well, you will see a little square hole that a 3/4 inch drive ratchet wrench will fit into, you need to put the wrench into that hold and you pull it to release the belt, it will be a pain in the but though because the wrench will only fit one certain way, and you know how that works when your working on a car, espessually the 3.0L V6 that dodge came out with. I am very good with these engines, I love them, they run forever, my car has over two hundred thousand miles on it and runs great...
How do you replace the alternator on a 1989 Ford Crown Victoria?
basically just remove the bolts holding it up, disconnect the harness, remove and replace!
not always.
if its a bad battery and can't hold a charge the same thing will happen.
I had a 99 s-10 that would occasionally die at the pump or even while driving, I had a new defective battery, replaced under warranty, no more problem.
I would have the alternator checked out before replacing it if that is the problem. I had my replaced and it wasn't cheap...$630 to be exact. The new alternators run around $200 and most mechanics will change the serpentine belt when they replace the alternator so this MAY be an added expense.
If the alt is working properly, you can remove one of the battery cables while the engine is running and it will continue to idle. If it dies then the alt needs to be replaced.

How do you test an alternator?
Start the engine, while the engine is running, remove either battery cable. It should stay running, if not, possible bad charging system. Or take it to auto zone. They check them for free
NEVER EVER disconnect a battery cable while the engine is running unless you like your computers fried.
Here's a link to the proper way to test:

Saying again, never ever disconnect a battery or alternator with the engine running. The resultant voltage spikes can fry electronics, the alternator diodes can be overloaded and fried...bad things can happen. The don't ALWAYS happen, but why risk $1,000's of dollars in damage when there are correct ways to test your alternator.
One simple way is at night star your car, turn off all electrical accessories, turn on your high beam head lights and point your car at a wall where you can see the reflected light well. Notice how bright they are. Turn off the car. If the lights get brighter, odds are very good your alternator is bad/weak.
make sure ALL lights are switching off when car is closed up for the night...also, new radio system? is the Amp staying on all night? also, an old test is to disconnect the negative battery cable and connect it back up...but use a test light to make the connection...in other words extend your negative cable with the test light and touch it to your negative terminal... if the test light bulb glow, it shows there is a draw on the system(have everything turned off while doing this) when the light comes on something is on and drawing power...start disconnecting fuses...when you disconnect the cicuit that is causing the draw, you'll be able to pinpoint the problem... also... ...everyone should have a manual for their vehicle(parts store or dealer), and a local library should have professional shop manuals available in the REFERENCE section for free...make copies of the appropriate sections...read up and good luck :) Dead short somewhere. Test by turning off everything (even dome light, clock etc) pull fuses if you have to. Disconect pos battery terminal. Put 12v test light between battery and battery cable. The brighter the light burn, the worse the short. Isolate circuit by pulling fuses one by one.
Why do some cars swerve when they are under a caution during a race?
Also, hot tires become quite sticky. rubber scrubbed from tires during a race collects on the track, so when the cars slow down, the pieces of rubber collect on the tires which means they need to be cleaned. The swerving helps remove the excess to improve traction on the restart.
Is there an oil shield for alternator or 1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport?
No but you can make one from aluminum flashing or from aluminum duct.
Is there a fuse on an alternator?
no there is not a fuse built into any alternator that i have seen to date (been a mechanic for 10 yrs) HOWEVER most vehicles have a charging fuse located either in-line or at the fuse panel so that if the rectifier or voltage regulator goes out the battery does not receive too much voltage or the wrong type of voltage ac versus dc
in short no the alternator doesn't but the vehicle should have one in the alternator circuit
How do you change the alternator in a gmc sonoma?
first of all you'll need 2 people a crow bar, rachet set and a wrench. well you'll need to take a crow bar and put it in between the tensor pulley to get the pressure off the belt and take that off, then just take the 3 or so bolts and wires off the back and replace with a new one. just make sure to get your wires back where and how they were. then to get the belt back on your going to have to have your other person put the belt on while you are getting the tensor and its ussually a tuff one.
How do you install the alternator belt on your 1997 Mazda 626?
You will have too take off outer belt to replace the alternator belt.using a 10mm socket remover front pully cover. Next use a 14 mm opened end or box wrench to loosen the top retaining bolt on the pump assembly. below the pully there is another 14mm bolt to loosen they should not be taken off just loosened. on the lower front of this assembley is 14 mm tensioning bolt loosen till you can slide off belt. know you can get to the inner alternator belt. The alternator has three bolts one on side facing you just above the pully its' a 12mm. at the rear bottom is a 14 mm retainging bolt you will have to feel for it as it can't be seen. the last one is another 12 mm tensioning Bolton the left side of the alternator as you face it loosen until belt comes off. reverse procedure to install.

How do you change the belts on a 1986 Chevy Celebrity and where are all the loosening bolts?
I've got an 85 2.5 celebrity and am assuming that your 86 is similar. Most people might think this is a stupid question, but I've spend hours trying to locate all the bolts to loosen. The alternator belt is straightforward. Loosen the alternator bolt in located in the slider portion and the pivot bolt (15mm on mine). The compressor belt is straightforward. Loosen the two compressor adjustment bolts in the slider slot and the loosen the pivot bolt. This belt will be hard to remove even with the compressor fully pushed down. Take some vitamins. The worse belt by far is the power steering belt. Loosen the pivot bolt on the bottom of the power steering "canister". There are two adjustment bolts to loosen from my memory. The one that is easy to find is on the engine side of the power steering canister. The other is hard to see but is located on the pulley side between two of the pulleys. It's also hard to get a wrench on. But, you've got to find and loosen this bolt. I cringe when this belt breaks. Good Luck!!!
Cat Converter,Fuel Pressure Regulator, and MAF Sensor/HO2 Sensor Try checking the fuel pressure with a gauge, not by looking at it coming out of the filter. Also check for spark at the wires end and the coil too!. To get an engine going you have to have Air,Fuel, and spark to have combustion Have you checked for fuel? I would loosen the fuel line to see if there is any fuel present; you may have a bad fuel pump. Mark
