Alternators

You will need to remove the alternator belt. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the alternator. Remove the alternator retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new alternator.

loosen serpentine belt.

remove ac line brake bolts (3) that sits on top of the alternator

remove top two alt bolts with 15mm socket

remove bottom alt bolt with a 15mm ratchet wrench(major pain bc ac line is in the way)

unplug voltage regulator pigtail

unscrew battery cable

Frist disconnect negative battery

Check for loose or corroded battery cable Check for blown fusable link

Without knowing what kind of vehicle you're driving, this is not simple.

If you put a "new" alternator in, you probably got a bad one. If you put a used alternator in you MOST LIKELY got a bad one. This is why it's usually best to leave this to a proffessional,then it's his headache! Have someone test the voltage at the battery, it should be around 13-14 volts when running. If it's not, make sure the belt is tight,no too, but tight. If still there's no change, you need another alternator.

It depends on the year of the vehicle. For a 93-98, the alternator that comes standard on the vehicle is a 90 amp. A 1999-on model typically has a 136 amp alternator. This alternator can be identified by its 6-groove serpentine pulley, and the black plastic housing cover on the rear of the alternator will normally have a "136" stamped on it. An optional 90 amp alternator was used on some 1999-on models, but the 90 amp unit has a double V-belt style pulley rather than a 6-groove serpentine pulley.

Usually if you have trouble finding the ten. pulley on these types of motors. You can tug on the belt real hard and look for a pulley that is moving. That's your ten. And very true about launching the wrench!!!

generaly these cars have a tensioner pulley... to loosen the belt, find the tensioner pulley, and loosen the bolt that keeps it from moving up and down.(could be on the block, but look around...) use a box end wrench on the bolt or nut head in the middle of the pulley... you will need to find the best starting position for the wrench as you will need to move the pulley and pull the belt off at the same time. the pulley will have spring tension on it so be careful not to launch your wrench when you let go! good luck

Some of the problem may be that the '93 is made by GMC not Chevy (weird). But, the tensioner pully is typically located at the top of the belt assembly. It is a smooth pully that has the word "load" and an arrow showing which way to turn the bolt. It will hacve a bolt in the center and can be loosened with a 15mm socket. Once it is loose, rotate the tensioner pully until the belt can be taken off or put on. Push the pully back in to the vertical position with the belt in place, then retighten your bolt

I recently installed a small fridge in the back of my van and wondered what was the best way to connect it up as I didn't want to end up with a flat engine battery.

Having Googled the subject I found a site that sells what is known as a 'split charge relay'. I emailed the firm (www.brocott.co.uk) who explained how it worked. The 'voltage sensing relay' is connected between the main engine battery and a second (leisure) battery that I have since installed in the back of the van. When the engine is running, the voltage sensing relay allows charge through to the second battery, via the main battery but only as much as is required, then it switches off. It monitors the battery voltages and allows charge through when needed.

The nice thing about this relay is that once the engine is switched off, the 2 batteries are isolated so there is no chance of getting a flat main battery. Furthermore, the installation of the voltage sensing relay is quite straight forward and you DON'T have to mess about with alternator connections or ignition wires, so very simple indeed. Now I can run any additional appliances from the leisure battery and not worry about a flat...

Its located on the passenger side near the bottom,you can see it from the top if you follow the belts on the side of the engine...

Under the hood, on the front of the engine, on the left hand side. It's the bit that has wires running to it.

If the alternator was faulty then the old alternator will not have been charging the battery properly. Charge the battery using a battery charger (one that plugs into the mains) or get a jump start form another car and once you are going run the car for a time to recharge the battery.

For Replacement of '96-'99 Nissan sentra alternator.1- disconnect the battery negative (ground)wire.2- disconnect the three alternator wires(two are plug on,the other is a screw on)3- disconnect the upper radiator hose leading from the radiator to the engine(its black and approx. six in. long) it blocks the removal of the Alt.4- looking down into the engine compartment at the alternator you will see a bracket fastened to the alternator with a bolt. The other end of the bracket is attached to the engine block.Remove BOTH of these bolts.Store these and all other bolts etc. in a safe place.5- Jack up the car high enough so you can use a creeper to work under the car.(PLEASE USE JACK STANDS TO SUPPORT THE CAR BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO GO UNDER IT!!)6- go under the car and remove the Cardboard splash shields. There are TWO that have to be removed,one on the wheel well, and one under the front of the engine. When you have removed the splash shields the alternator will be visible from beneath the car.7- using a good drop light locate the TWO lower alternator mounting bolts,they are on opposite sides of the alternator.Remove both these bolts and save.8-The alternator is now bolt free and can be moved to and fro.Rock the alternator until there is "play" in the belt attached to the alternator pulley.Remove this belt(if you have a splined/grooved pulley, you may need to use a pry bar to get the belt off).Note the way the belt is sitting on the remaining pulleys;draw a diagram if you have to, this will save you problems later in the installation.Remove the alternator from the top of the engine compartment.Its a tight fit but if you play with it awhile you'll get it out.9- once you have the alternator out, remove the plastic shield held on by three screws.This is a cooler and will need to be installed on a rebuilt alternator.10- Install alternator from the top of the engine compartment(the same place you removed it from.Go under the car and LOOSELY mount the two alternator bolts.While under the car reinstall the fan belt.11- From the top of the engine compartment,reattach the top alternator mounting bracket(rock alternator to & fro to line up the front bolt.Tighten both of these bolts.Reinstall the two plug-in and the one screw held alternator wires.Reinstall the Radiator hose.12- From under the car,tighten Both alternator mounting bolts.Check fan belt for proper alignment if you have a grooved alternator pulley.Reinstall the splash shields.13- Reinstall the negative battery wire.Make sure its tight.14- Check the radiator fluid level(I'm sure you lost some fluid when you disconnected it)top off as needed.14- Recheck ALL your work,make sure you don't have any left over nuts or bolts that may come back to haunt you later down the road.Are all bolts tight? are all wires connected? Is the fan belt aligned in the grooves?If you can answer yes to all these questions,lower your car off the jacks and go for a ride!!

if the 2000 is anything like the 99, the alternator is on the top in the front. Very easy to find. Pull of the serpentine belt (use the tensioner to help) and then you remove the electrical connections very simply. UUndo the three bolts connecting it, pull it off. Do the reverse to put the new one on...and slap the serpentine belt back on. Very easy process..hardest part was the belt, but you can do it.

loosen the one or two bolts holding the alternator in place, i believe 14mm, then loosen the 12mm on the adjuster (side) and "screw" the 12mm bolt down to lower the alternator down enough and replace the belt. This is almost the same for every Toyota engine which doesnt use an automatic belt tensioner (serpentine) on the alternator.

If the tensioner isn't working right, you replace it. Tension is determined by the tensioner and is not adjustable.

Although a previous answer said, "I had the same problem with a 2002 corvette. I replaced the battery and never had the problem again," I would suggest that you have your mechanic check the crank and cam shaft sensors to make sure they aren't corroding. My 2001 Metro LSI was doing the same thing, and it turned out to be the cam shaft sensor. Replacing it wasn't that big a deal, however, the long time corrosion of the sensor also caused the car's main computer to short out -- and replacing that was a big deal.

The alternator must be removed either through the bottom of the vehicle, or threw the passanger side wheel well opening. Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect the battery. Remove the serpentine belt by removing tention, and sliding it off. Under the car, disconnect the power wire using a 10MM socket. use a small screw driver and pry upwards on the electrical connector to remove quickly. remove both the Lower and Upper mounting bolts. in some cases, the upper bolt can be more easily accessed from under the hood. once the mounting bolts are moved, some prying, or wiggleing of the alternator may be necessary to free it from the bracket. Installation is just opposite. should take a novice around 30-45 minuites to complete the job.

Check battery cables and alternator wiring for looseness and/or corrosion.

Weak alternator--can't keep up with battery load. Check with a voltmeter

A fully charged battery should read approx. 12.8 volts withou engine running

With engine voltage should increase to approx. 13.8-14.2 volts. If not in this range replace

13-15 volts

No, the parts on these vehicles are not interchangeable/compatible with each other.

You could use Mercury Tracer parts though.

Usually, these things are made so you can't mess it up by "keying" the connection. I'll assume the connection is broken since your asking. the positive (+) output (usually red) is plugged to the Positive side of the automotive circuit and the Negative (-) output (usually black) is connected to chassis ground or the negative side of the automotive circuit.

If its not clear what side is positive and negative, you should take it to a professional that will do a good job and has more knowledge.

I have a 1990 Dodge Spirit with the same engine in it... now you will need to jack the passenger side of the car up, and when you get under it look at the side of the engine that is closest to the passenger side wheel well, you will see a little square hole that a 3/4 inch drive ratchet wrench will fit into, you need to put the wrench into that hold and you pull it to release the belt, it will be a pain in the but though because the wrench will only fit one certain way, and you know how that works when your working on a car, espessually the 3.0L V6 that dodge came out with. I am very good with these engines, I love them, they run forever, my car has over two hundred thousand miles on it and runs great...

basically just remove the bolts holding it up, disconnect the harness, remove and replace!
