Fire Ants?! Well actually fire ants conatin a dermatitis like toxin that activates when introcued to skin cells and triggers a small alergic reaction, almost like a small jelly fish. Gathering a large amount of these and roasting them over a fire will nuetralize the toxin, but the flavor would be nasty. Im not sure of any recipes. Yes they are edible BUT make sure you do not have any serious allergic reactions too the ant because you can ends up suffocating from a swollen throat. Try carpenter ants, they are safer and taste better.

It's best if you get an exterminator in to see if you have just ants or carpenter ants. Carpenter ants love rotten wood or moist places and can do a great deal of damage. The exterminator will have to look for the Satellite nest to destroy that first. It's true that just because you see a carpenter ant (black and much larger than other ants) can travel quite a ways but doesn't mean you have them in your walls. Go outside the perimeter of your house and if you have a woodpile (move it!) Check for rotten wood (near the ground and under eaves) and rotten areas on your roof and see if you can't repair it. I just saw what appears to be a red velvet ant in my yard in Williamsburg, VA, near Jamestown Settlement. I have never seen such an insect and was searching the internet to see what it was.

I also found one in Lynchburg, VA today. It was the first time I had ever seen one. From my understanding VA does not seem to have the climate that these insects normally inhabit, but they have been spotted.
