How long does it take for a wooly bear caterpillar to wake up from hibernation We kept a wooly caterpillar in the fridge over the winter. Now that it's Spring we've taken him out but he hasn't wakened?

Well, gee, I wonder why........you kept him in a fridge!

What were you thinking? They can't live in a fridge!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know how long it takes for a wooly bear caterpillar to wake up from hibernation, but I do know that they don't live in fridges, they live outside!

By Keeping the caterpillar in the fridge that will result into death of the caterpillar because of the gas component ot the Fridge

...

There is no air or daylight or warming spells in a refrigerator. Your little guy is probably dead.

Make a small box out of screen material, about 12" x 12". Leave one side open, this side will go down on the grass outside. The screen will keep your friend from getting out. Make sure there is plenty of grass, lots of different leaves and a couple of sticks inside for him. Stand the stick up so he can climb to the top if he wants to. They love clover, so plant some inside the area. Make sure you pick a place where he can get rain, get out of the sun when he wants to, and get into sun when he wants to. Don't bring him indoors. Let him hibernate. In the spring, he will eat and build the cocoon. Then you will see him become a moth or butterfly depending on what Caterpillar you have. After you see it is out of the cocoon, please let it go so it can live it's life with it's friends out in the gardens.

In an ant file how do you check if a property exists?

Previous answer worked, but logic was backwards. Here is a version I've tested:

<if>

<equals arg1="${env.MYVAR}" arg2="$${env.MYVAR}" />

<then>

<echo>MYVAR param did not exist</echo>

</then>

<else>

<echo>MYVAR param existed - ${env.MYVAR}</echo>

</else>

</if>

Do insects sleep?

this is from -just wondering-

Short answer: Yes, but not the way we do. The vast majority of insects are active only during the day or only at night, and they will rest during their off-time. But is it "sleep"?

Long answer: Sleep in vertebrates is a complex physiological process, involving a number of very specific brain functions and hormones. In that sense, no arthropods have the same sort of sleep we do, since their physiology is almost completely different. However, there is a state called "torpor" that is the insect's equivalent of sleep. If any vertebrates come close, it would be fish. An insect in torpor exhibits immobility and distinctly reduced response to stimuli, though it can rouse from torpor in a matter of seconds if the stimulus is strong enough. Bearing in mind that there are already 1 million known insect species (out of an estimated 10-50 million), you'll appreciate that this is a generalization. There certainly are some insects, especially aquatic ones and those that live near the poles, that have different daily cycles or even maintain round-the-clock activity. Also, among insects that do exhibit torpor, the degree and nature of its expression is somewhat variable.

One of the more dramatic forms is seen in some bees (mostly in the family Apidae, and mostly in males) which will firmly clamp onto a plant with their jaws in the evening, and let go with their legs, which they then fold up. They hold this odd pose all night long, dangling in space, until they rouse the following morning. Many of the species which do this use the same spot every evening, presumably marking it with some chemical that they can detect from a distance, so they can find their way back. This very specific behavior is about the closest thing any insect has to conventional sleep.

Another special case is the New Zealand weta, a large flightless cricket relative, which lives at high altitude and freezes solid every evening, thawing out in the morning to go about its business. The wonders of antifreeze.

Are ants dangerous?

ANSWER:Generally no. They are beneficial because they clean up the place. There are some species that can injure and even kill. Fire ants in the southern United States swarm and sting multiple times per ant and yes, it feels like fire. The army ant can devastate insect and small animal populations in a forest by swarming in the billions. A bullet ant has one of he most painful stings. And there is an ant in Australia that can kill you with one sting. I will have to look up the name of it.

It's called the Jack Jumper ant.

Can all ants morf in to queens?

Definitely not.

In most kinds of ants, if you feed one of the larvae the right amounts of the right kind of food and hormones, then it will grow up into a queen. Otherwise it will grow into a worker or soldier or some other caste. Once that has happened, in fact, by the time it forms a pupa, it is too late to change anything.

A few kinds of ants form only small colonies and they do not have proper castes at all. Most of their females may lay eggs, and if the main egg-laying females die, then other females can begin active egg laying.

However, some castes of many kinds of termites (they are not ants, but form similar colonies in much the same way as ants) can morph into queens if the real queen dies. The morphed queen is never as big and effective as the original real queen, and it may take several morphed queens to do the job of one real queen.

Are ants pests?

yes they are!

Answer:

Plants, insects and animals are only "pests" when they are where people find them inconvenient. Ants at picnic or in your larder are pests. Ants removing dead animals in the forest are parts of an active and healthy ecosystem.
