No. Syd Barrett unfortunately wen't crazy because of the large amounts of drugs he was taking in the late 60's. The band had to let him go due to his lack of songwriting at the time and his extremely unusual behaviors. (He is reported to have stared at a box of corn flakes for three hours straight without saying a word.)
Before his problems though, he was a very happy person that everyone loved and admired.

Autistic people (identity-first language) live as long as Neurotypical people, Autism doesn't impact on health in such a way that could shorten someone's life. What is life like for a child with autism?
It depends on the severity. Autism treatment has come a very long way. There are many therapies available. These therapies work on social and academic progress. I am a mother of an autistic child. Hang in there. As long as your child is happy and healty, that's all that matters. Go to the Autism Society website. There is lots of information and support there.
Ettina: I am high-functioning autistic. It seems to me that the most important determinant of what it's like for an autistic person is how other people react to your autism. When I was a kid being bullied at school and punished by teachers for things I couldn't help, it really sucked. But as a homeschooled kid with accepting parents, and now as a college student working towards turning my intense interest into a degree and a career, life is pretty good.
From what I've seen with other autistics, no severity of autism makes you incapable of having a good life. It may make you unemployable, or unable to live independently, but given the proper support, anyone with autism can be happy. If you're doing what you love to do, surrounded by people who care about you and accept you for who you are, life is good no matter how severe your disability.
What activities that is suitable for retardation mental child?
It depends on his/her interests. I taught a girl who had severely limited cognitive ability (2nd grade reading level in the 8th grade) who was on the cheerleading team and did theater. Mind you, she didn't excel at either, but she chose them and she got a lot of enjoyment out of the activities. Give the child a choice. Ask what they like. I also knew a girl who likes to color and do puzzles. or sing songs and dance
Was Victor the Savage of Averyon autistic?
There are some reports that said he was. Because of him not responding to certain sounds, and lack of speech. It is impossible to teach an adolescent speech because they are at the level of remaining mute. Victor was reported being observed many times rocking back and forth. He was always offened by crowds and sometimes threw tantrums whenever he was tired of his lessons with Itard. Victor couldn't make facial expressions or couldn't weep during his early captivity. He was very insensitive to cold temperatures and even when he touched burning coals whenever he was cooking a potato. He would strip off any garment put on him, and prefered certain foods (potatoes and nuts). Some reports say that autism was the main thing that helped him survive through the harshness of being in the wild.

Can autism be overlooked as a child then be recognized in an adult?
Yes, as understanding of Autism changes diagnosis changes - people who are adults today may not have been recognized as being Autistic as children due to lack of awareness.
I'll offer myself as an example:
I'm diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and was clearly Autistic as a child: developmental delays, non-verbal, regular meltdowns, among other issues. In the 1980's Autism was still considered a 'boys disorder' and few people knew about Autism, thus I was not diagnosed and people didn't know what to make of my behavior. In the 1990's I had fewer issues with Autism, so although autism was better known my problems were not severe enough for people to have realized I was Autistic. In the late 1990's/early 2000's my school insisted I go to therapy due to my behavior, the therapists knew I was Autistic but didn't inform me or my parents, thus diagnosis wasn't made. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 28 years old, and that was only because I was working with disabled children at the time so I went looking for information and realized that I was Autistic.
