Look on the ribbed side of the belt as it is going over pulleys. If you see cracks it would be wise to replace it.

It sounds a bit like a water pump that went out all of a sudden. Losing the belt would kill the power steering, so maybe the pump bearing failed and the belt burned or jumped off.

there's a tank for it and the lid has a dipstick. buy the fluid online and fill the tank to the mark on the dipstick. if you do it wrong the wosrst that could happen is you get really touchy steering but that could easily be fixed by draining some of the fluid.

You will not be able to route a different belt without the compressor even if you use a shorter belt but you can sometimes get what is called a "bypass" pulley for some of the models but I would need to know the year and engine size to see if one is available.......

Yes, having a belt too loose will cause a sepentine belt to squeal, check tension by lifting the belt upwards with your finger and continue tightening until you can only move the belt about a half inch either way. Too tight and the belt will have a much shorter life span.

I'm not sure on the timing belt, but before 140,000 KM (100,000 MI)is a safe bet. As far as acessory belts, there is no recommended interval, but they should be changed if they are noisy or if recommended by your technician. I'm not sure of the timing belt interval, but if it was mine I would do it at 60,000. Serpentine belts should bechanged if there are any cracks going parallel to the belt edges, or if the belts has cracks in the belt perpendicular to edges so that pieces are starting to come off. Perpendicular cracks are normal, unless pieces are starting to come off. If a technician recommends a belt, ask why. If it does not fit this criteria, you probably don't need one. With the exception of oil or coolant contamination. If there is noise from it and that bothers you, then change it. If you get cornered into getting it changed, ask to see it. If it didn't fall into the above situations, I empower you to use it as tourniquet and wrap it around his neck for selling you something you didn't need.

You should start using synthetic oil right away. The engines in today's cars don't go through a "break in period" like older cars did because the cylinders and pistons are machined to very tight tolerances. jj is not a martial art you can just get a black belt in a year from like tae kwon do, karate, etc. it takes years of practice, dedication, and repetition. not only does your skill level in your jiu jitsu knowledge need to evolve but so does your character in order to advance in the belts. leave your ego at the door!
