Who is a hero of your society?

Your Hero should be someone that actually DOES something. For example, if your hero is Taylor Lautner or someone Famous, you need to change it. All they do is sing or act, they do nothing to be your true hero! You could have someone that fights and DIES for YOUR country so YOU, YOURSELF can have freedom. Your mom or dad, because they help YOU achieve things and help YOU suceed.

Hero: A solider, Mother, Grandfather, Someone who has helped you

Non-Hero: Superman, Taylor Lautner, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jonas Brothers

BUT...

If your actor had actually done something helpful for you. (not like signed you an autograph) But just done something that made a difference, and that has to be in a good way.

I hope now you know who your REAL hero is.

What are the similarities between Beowulf the book and Beowulf the movie?

Answer

I read the epic poem and saw the movie. The movie stays pretty close to the movie except for two main points. Warning, these are spoilers.

In the book Beowulf goes back to (the land of the Geat's) Geatland to become king of his uncles kingdom. In the movie he stays in (the land of the Danes) Denmark and becomes king of Hrothgar's kingdom. In the poem Beowulf kills Grendel's mom. In the movie they make love and have a human beast like creature son (a dragon as a son). Although, in the film Beowulf returns and says he kills her so I guess one could argue it stays in line with the poem that way. In the book she could be still alive and they do the same thing but it doesn't say so we will never know. Also the in the poem there is a larger social backdrop of this type of society that wants peace and stability but that is at odds with a heroic culture of honor and revenge. In the movie they only touch on that very briefly when Beowulf comments on that the age of heroes is giving way to Christianity.

What was the Most important event of the year 2007?

One event that didn't seem like a major event at the time but would go on to become very important was when then-Senator Barack Obama announced he was a candidate for the US presidency. In 2007, the US got its first-ever female speaker of the House of Representatives, when California Democrat Nancy Pelosi rose to that position. The war in Iraq remained controversial, but rather than announcing an exit strategy, President Bush announced what came to be called "the Surge," when he sent an additional 20,000 troops to fight in Iraq. On the campus of Virginia Tech, a gunman murdered 32 people and wounded 17 others before taking his own life. And a big story in technology was that the iPhone was introduced for the first time.

What were major battles in WW1?

In 1914: Marne (Aug), 1st Ypres. In 1915: Gallipoli(Feb), 2nd Ypres, Tannenberg (Tannenburg). In 1916: Verdun (Feb-Dec), Jutland (April), Somme (June), Cambrai (Dec). In 1917: 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele) (June).

What was the 'race to the sea'?

Before the days of trench warfare in WWI, both sides tried to outflank each other and this was termed the "race to the sea." It was a series of battles that began in Champange, France in 1914 and ended in Nieuwpoort, Belgium. The Race to the Sea was a name given to a period of World War I when, on the Western Front, the two sides were still engaged in mobile warfare. With the German advance stalled at the First Battle of the Marne, the opponents continually attempted to outflank each other through north-eastern France. This process brought the forces back to positions prepared under British Admiralty guidance, on the North coast in Western Belgium. The nature of operations then changed to trench warfare, which is very large scale siege warfare. This produced a continuous front line of trench fortifications more than two hundred miles long, which by the following Spring extended from the coast to the Swiss border.

What aspect of Anglo-Saxon life discussed in Life in 999 A Grim Struggle is also in full view in Beowulf?

In Beowulf, the warrior must face Grendel and his mother. In the tale, we hear that Beowulf defeats both monsters with ease. However what we don't hear is that Beowulf nears defeat in both instances and uses the help of the fabled Pokemon master Ash Ketchum and his legendary Pokemon Pikachu to defeat these terrible monsters. However, Ash Ketchum is defeated and Beowulf is forced into his only option: he goes into a DEEPER DREAM LEVEL. By doing so, he is able to psychologically defeat Grendel and his mother.

Beowulf later meets his demise when he encounters a dragon. He brings along with him his greatest ally: Megatron and Megan Fox. However, the dragon overcomes Megan Fox's sluttiness by eating her and melts Megatron into scrap metal. At this, Beowulf flees deep into a forest and commits suicide after a psychological breakdown and years of haunting from the ghosts of Grendel and Grendel's mother. The end.

Is Beowulf is an elegy?

No, it is not.

Beowulf is an epic. Or alternatively, a Romance (meaning, similar to the whole knights and maidens thing, with chivalry and all that stuff).

An Elegy is lamenting the death of someone. Which, while Beowulf does do at times, that is not the purpose of the work; it is meant to tell a story!

What are the qualities of an epic hero?

There are two very important components to the epic hero.

The first component is the obvious thing about the accomplishments he or she makes in the external world. Because we're talking "epic hero" the accomplishments are on a grand and large scale and can include slaying of fearsome beasts like dragons or the exploration and conquering of whole worlds or countries. The important thing is that the accomplishments be very big.

The second component is that of internal development. The epic hero has to go through many trials and not only accomplish things in the external world but he or she must also go through a substantial growth of self along the way. These growth steps often include things like overcoming internal fear, (gaining courage) understanding of self and self limitations, and overcoming self by committing to helping others.

An epic hero has to do very large things both in the external world and in the internal world and the two are very strongly tied together. The external accomplishments are never reached unless the hero achieves the internal growth first.

An epic hero represents an ideal for what a culture thinks people should be like.
