How do you calculate the fuel consumption of an aircraft?
Fuel consumption is given in gallons (or liters) per hour. Unless you have an in-line fuel flow meter (which most small planes don't) figuring fuel consumption is more of an art than a science. The problem is that the engine doesn't burn fuel at the same rate all the time. If you spend a lot of time idling, waiting for take off, you're going to get skewed consumption numbers compared to immediately taking off and quickly reaching cruise speed. The best you can get is an average. First, you fill the tanks full. Then, you run the engine and note the time. Then you fill the tanks again and you note the amount of fuel. You take the gallons (or liters) and divide it by the time number.

Jet fuel is kerosene, about the same stuff as diesel. Octane is a number that measures anti-knock properties of fuels. Diesels knock--that's how they work. Jets don't have enough compression to knock. Jet and diesel fuels would measure typically 15-25 "octane anti-knock". Sort of....

How does jet fuel get to the airport?
Typically, large commercial airports have fuel delivered by pipeline. Many also have fueling points on the ramp at the gate to reduce the ground vehicle traffic in the terminal area (no fuel trucks driving around). As airliners use a LOT of fuel (up to 31,000 gallons on a 777, for example), it would take far too many fuel tanker trucks (at around 8,000 gallons each) to keep a major airport in operation. Smaller general aviation airports typically either have above-ground 'tank farms' or below-ground tanks similar to automotive gas stations.
