What is information on the Chicago Guernsey Farm?

The Chicago Guernsey Farm was located on Garfield Road in Hinsdale, IL. My father worked there as a dairy man in the mid-twenties and it went out of existence in the sixties. They had their own herd of guernsey cows and milked them twice daily. Interestingly, during the Second World War, they deliverd the milk on the close-in routes by horse and wagon to save gasoline and tires (which were rationed) for the further routes.

Santa is whatever you want him to be. He is the symbol of friendship and cookies.

Actually, Santa is originally white because it is an English custom. St. Nicholas has been visiting homes for over 500 years. But as the culture of our world progressed, the orgin has changed to fit the believer. But don't forget, whatever race he is, he likes cookies and milk quite alot! (And he also likes to give you presents!)

What breeds of cattle have short gestation periods?

The following breeds have a short gestation period (note that not all breeds with short gestation periods will be listed here):

  • Angus
  • Dexter
  • Guernsey
  • Jersey
  • Meuse Rhine Issel
  • Red Angus
  • Speckle Park

It was originally believed that rate of maturity was correlated with rate of gestation. This is now not the case. Rate of maturity is simply carcass maturity, or the time when an animal starts to lay down fat, and has nothing to do with age of puberty nor gestation length.

How can a black and white image be represented as a bitmap graphic?

The image is split into a two dimensional grid of pixels. If the brightness of the pixel is below a certain value, it is considered black, otherwise it is considered white. Each pixel is mapped onto 1 bit in memory, and if it is white, a 1 is stored, else a 0 is stored. (Sometimes it is the other way round)

Where does Maya blue pigment come from?

Studying the mica deposits in Georgia somehow led to the subject of Georgia clays. Clay is one that state's most important exports. Georgia clays are characterized by a wide variety of colors and chemical characteristics. Somewhere along the Wikipedia trail, Haskell stumbled onto a clay with the odd name of attapulgite, also known as palygorskite. He continued reading the article:

"The name attapulgite is derived from the U.S. town of Attapulgus, Georgia, in the extreme southwest corner of the state, where the mineral is abundant. It is known to have been a key constituent of the pigment called "Maya Blue", which was used notably by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization of Mesoamerica on ceramics, sculptures, murals and (most probably) Maya textiles. The clay mineral was also used by the Maya as a curative for certain illnesses, and there is evidence to show it was also added to pottery temper."

After searching for centuries, Mexican scholars found a cenote (sink hole) in the State of Yucatan in the 1960s that contained attapulgite. The small cenote seemed far inadequate to have furnished all of the Maya cities with their blue pigment for 1,800 years. Mexican geologists and archaeologists have been searching South America since then for a major deposit of attapulgite. They should have looked northward. Attapulgus, GA is much closer than South America, and adjacent to the Chattahoochee, a major navigable river that flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

The town of Attapulgus, GA is derived from the name of an earlier Creek Indian town named Atapaw-lekhuse,which means "wooden stirring-paddle-very hot." The name may refer to the heating and stirring of raw attapulgite clay that is required to chemically change it into Maya Blue pigment. It is located near Bainbridge in Decatur County, GA. Lake Seminole now covers much of the bottomlands of Decatur County where there were formerly Native American towns.

The locations of the attapulgite mines are close to one of North America's earliest indigenous towns, Kolomoki. It was lived in from approximately 250 AD to 950 AD, which happens to coincide with the occupation period of several Classic Period Maya cities, Kolomoki contained approximately 2,000 residents and at least eight mounds. Anthropologists believe that Kolomoki's population swelled during seasonal markets and festivals. Hopewell Culture sites in the Ohio Valley were contemporary with Kolomoki, but did not contain many permanent residents.

How does Hereford cattle adapt in South Africa?

Herefords are selected for coat quality, forage convertability, and ability to calve and thrive with minimal management (or no pampering with grain and such). Much of the Herefords in SA are selected to have lighter red coats with not so much curliness as the ones in Europe nor as deep a dark red. They are also selected for pigment around the eyes and the udders to guard against pink eye, cancer eye, and sunburnt udders. Having pigment around the eyes for white-face cattle is crucial if they are to survive in conditions like that found in South Africa. On the veld, where there is lower quality forage and where they have to look for feed themselves, minimal management is very important. Forage convertability is twice important because it's not cost effective to raise cattle that are going to get thin on forage like coarse grass and brush that grows on the veld; cows that gain on that kind of forage and raise good calves is a must-have.

Herefords are naturals at adapting at almost any type of climate. They have thick hide, which enables the ability to, like the Brahman-type cattle, be resistant to heat and insects, and they "slick-off" nicely from the colder months to the hotter ones. They have excellent mothering ability, great forage convertability, and are all around very hardy cattle. Those that prolapse, have eye problems, udder problems, and conformation problems simply get culled out, and those that have the characteristics that are ideal for both the conditions they are raised in and the management conditions they live in, are kept and selected for.

Why are Brahman crossbreeds commonly used for bull riding?

It's likely because they are easier to train for bucking than other breeds are. Brahman cattle tend to be considerably smarter than European cattle, and thus getting them to "get it" in the rodeo circuit will take less time than it would for a Charolais or Angus bull to be able to buck.

It's also probably because they look meaner than the other breeds do, and tend to have a more interesting variation in colour patterns which make them really easy to recognize from the stands and from a bull rider's point of view.

Did Bobby Hull raise Champion Hereford cattle?

Maybe not Champion Herefords, but it does say in several articles that he raised (and probably still does) Polled Herefords on his ranch in Ontario.
