What is the most efficient model of a submarine?

Until the advent of Nuclear Power for submarines, which gave them much greater speed capability underwater than on the surface, submarines were essentially designed as low-profile surface vessels with limited submergence capability. As such, their overall design made them noiser underwater and faster on the surface rather than quieter and faster underwater, the hallmark of modern submarine designs.

The most hydrodynamically efficient model of submarine is the elongated teardrop shape that is characteristic of most large modern military u-boats. These boats have a rounded nose, a hull diameter that is appropriate to the design objectives of that particular boat, and then the hull tapers down in diameter back past midships to just a few feet around at the aft end where the screw is attached to the shaft. It makes for really good hydrodynamic performance and good efficiency. It's a quiet shape, too, and it's all about the noise, isn't it? Sharp points on the bow make for extreme difficulties in design and add little to nothing to the performance of the hydrofoil. (It's more about cross-sectional area after considerations regarding the shape of the nose, or bow.)

Also, as mentioned, a nuclear submarine is operationally efficient because it can operate at sea for extended periods without the need for fuel, and, more importantly, can operate UNDER the water for a long time because the propulsion system doesn't require air - oxygen - as part of its power generating cycle. Lastly, think about this: an old diesel electric submarine, when it is operating underwater using its battery banks to drive an electric motor to turn the screw, is REALLY quiet. A nuclear boat constantly runs pumps and steam turbines while underwater, and these actually make more noise than the electric systems that drive the old boats when they are submerged. Of course, when the old boats surface to run engines to charge batteries, they can be heard for many miles and identified for what they are.

How do you release the hood on a 1987 corvette with a dead battery?

Why is it that both of your headlights wont go down even though the fuses are ok and they do go up?

if the car was involved in a front end collision the bumper guard could have been pushed back enough to block them from going down. My headlights were in such a way they would go up but not down - had to remove the bumper guard and then straighten out the frame a little for em to work

What did a new 1980 Corvette cost in 1980?

In 1980 there were just over 40,000 coupes made, and no convertibles. The BASE price started at $13,140.24 and options were added to that.

Why does your 1987 Corvette puff blue smoke when you first start it?

The engine valve stem seals are worn. Usually valve stem seal replacement is all that is needed, occasionally there is wear in the valve stems and/or valve guides which requires further repair.

How long is the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette?

The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette is 14 ft. 6.6 in. (174.6 in.) long.

How do you replace a front turn signal on a 2003 Corvette?

First turn the headlamps to the on position. Then turn the switch back one click to the parking light position. Take a 13mm wrench and remove the hood stop. From there you work blind, feel your way to the socket and push the lock tab in and rotate the socket. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket. If it burns out again in a few weeks check if the housing is cracked from heat. If it is then driving in the rain will drip onto the hot light bulb and it will be out again shortly. You can seal up the housing with some RTV smeared over the crack. Good Luck, Dave

How do you remove a door panel on a 1995 Corvette?

Your in luck, Just the year I own... start by removing the press in keepers in the bottom of the door panel(round, interior color)there are 5 of these along the very bottom of the door panel. next emove the 2 Phillips screws from the interior door pull handle, the one you use to close the door(look straight down into it) then remove the one Phillips screw from behind the interior door relese handle. carefully with a 90 degree pick, pull straight out on the manuel door lock knob, it will pry off, then slip that piece forward and off so the door panel will clear the lock rod, the mirror/window switches simply pry out of the panel, I just worked my release handle and switches back through the holes in the door panel when removing my panel, slightly tug the door panel up and towards you, it should come right off, good luck and be careful....Kenny W.

Good tip by Kenny. I have a 1996 Corvette and followed his instructions but there were two more hidden screws he did not mention that must be removed prior to attempting to remove the door panel. One is behind the door lamp above the release handle. Gently pry the top of the lamp cover down until it releases then gently pull it from the cavity. You will now be able to see the first hidden screw. The second hidden screw is located behind the manual lock that was pried loose. Once you have removed 5 "press in keepers" and 5 screws the door panel is free to come off.... Kevin H.

Why dont they drive Corvettes?

you don't say who, but there are several reasons people don't drive corvettes. the main one is they are almost impossible to drive on snow or ice. also, they only have 2 seats so if someone needed 3 or more seats, he wouldn't drive one. also the fuel efficiency is not good. also, the police could stop you thinking you were some kind of hot-rodder or speed demon. some people simply don't like them and therefore do not drive them. i cannot answer your question without knowing specifically who you are referring to. generally speaking the primary reason for not driving a corvette is not having one. before i got a corvette, i didn't drive them. now that i have one i drive it most every day except in the winter. i like corvettes and suggest that you try one, assuming of course that you are a safe driver. being powerful and fast, these cars may be dangerous in the wrong hands. please be careful on the road!

How do i change oil in 1978 Corvette?

1. Locate oil drain plug (on the driver's side of the drain pan near the oil filter - behind the front wheel).

2. Place container underneath plug location.

3. Remove plug with socket or wrench (caution - oil may be hot!)

4. Let oil drain out (removing oil fill cap may speed drain & help prevent "gulping")

5. (Optional but recommended) Remove oil filter - you may need to use a special wrench. Also, be careful since filter will be full of (potentially) hot oil.

6. Install new oil filter after lubricating the rubber gasket with oil.

7. Replace drain plug & torque to 20 ft-lbs. It's also a good idea to verify the oil pan bolts are tight at the same time.

8. Add four quarts of clean oil via oil fill cap, let settle, & check level on dipstick. If the level is above the ADD mark, run engine for about a minute & check for leaks underneath the car.

9. After oil has circulated, re-check dipstick & add oil as necessary.

10. Don't forget to replace the oil fill cap!

Also, it is not really necessary to raise the front of the car. As low as it is, there's still enough clearance for my oil drain container, and the oil drain plug is within easy reach from the side of the car.

Make sure you dispose of the dirty oil properly. Most auto parts stores (Advance, AutoZone, etc.) will reclaim used oil for free, so there's no reason to dump it down a storm drain & contaminate the environment.

Where can one purchase a 1975 Corvette?

Buying a 1975 Corvette is not as easy as buying a new car. There are many ways to look for an older car. Contacting Chevrolet dealers that sell pre-owned vehicles would be a good start. Looking in newspaper ads for a 1975 Corvette would also be a good idea. The internet is full of different used car websites and advertisements.

How do you change burnt out headlight on 2000 Nissan Frontier?

It's easy to change the halogen headlight bulbs on a 2000Nissan Frontier pickup. First, go to the Nissan dealer, buy the correct 26296-9B91E halogen bulb embedded in its black assembly. Study what it looks like, especially the back end with the plug. It has a red, O-ring that seals the hole it goes in. A small flashlight will be handy to see all this. Rubber tape may be useful. (See note.)

1) Lift hood. The bulbs are conveniently located inside the engine compartment, and you don't need to remove any other equipment to get at them.

2) Find the passenger side bulb located in front of the battery. Driver-side, in front of the air filter.

Note: If there's black, pie-cut, fiberboard around the headlight hole, and it's old and brittle, you may have to just break off a couple, small pie-pieces in order to see the top of the bulb assembly, to pull up on the wire retainer to release the "ears" etc. Won't hurt anything to break small pieces off. When done, put some rubber tape across the protector pieces you broke off to help keep stuff out of this area.

3) Notice a black plastic retainer clip (top center) that is locking the wiring plug to the black, bulb assembly.

4) Push down on the middle of the clip to release the plug. Use a flashlight and you'll see how it works. Pull plug off the back of the bulb assembly.

5) There is also a wire retainer in the same area. This is locking the black, bulb assembly in place. The wire hooks over two "ears" on the top of the black, bulb assembly.

6) Lift the wire retainer up, off the ears, and rearward to release the black, bulb assembly.

7) Rotate the wire retainer back and downward, out of the way of the bulb assembly.

8) With your fingers, pull the black assembly straight back out of its "hole." Might have to gently wiggle it a little, then back it straight out of the hole. Remember, there's a fragile halogen bulb on the other end.

8) When replacing assembly, do not touch halogen bulb with hands. Carefully insert new assembly into its hole, trying not to touch anything with the bulb part. (Even a fingerprint can cause a hot, lighted bulb to crack.) Gently press the assembly into the hole until you can see it's properly aligned and seated. (All the red O-ring will be covered.)

9) Rotate the wire retainer up and over the assembly so it locks behind the "ears."

10) Press the wiring plug into the assembly. Plastic retainer will click. Locked. Done!
