Why do 3.1 gm engines rattle when cold?
The 3.1 has special lightweight alloy pistons fitted. They expand and contract at a different rate than the block, so for several minutes the engine will emit a knocking sound until the pistons expand to fit the cylinders. In addition, as carbon builds up in the "squish zone" on the cylinder wall at the top of the piston's travel, the piston will make a noise as it contacts the carbon until the block expands. This situation is perfectly harmless to the engine. Other than the leaky intake manifold gasket problem, this engine has proven to be quite reliable and a very durable workhorse.

it's easy. first put a large drain pan under the trans. remove the pan bolts and pan. pull filter down by hand, there is a "O" ring that needs to be pryed out this can be a little tricky. new o ring needs to be tapped in lightly with a soft hammer an piece of wood.(i never replaced the o ring,2 filters and 115k miles ,no problem) push filter in.clean pan and magnet good.put gasket on pan and bolt it to trans. torqe is110in. lbs in a cross pattern.fill with approx 7 quarts fluid(i like mobil 1 expensive but good stuff) get it nice and hot check the level. good luck,mark.

You have to power off the stereo, and then press and hold the "function" button, (might be different on different models) and then there should be a setting for the clock. I don't have my book handy at the moment, but I can check it and get back to you later. Hope this get you pointed in the right direction.

Its not a hard thing to do IF you have done any type of auto mechanical stuff before. You take off the tires (both if you safely can) and the brake drum slides right off behind it. You should either replace with new or have the drums machined, or"rotated" at a local parts store. Both Checker and Autozone in my area do this. After drum removal pay close attention of what springs go where, there are only two if memory serves, one long one short, and what side the adjuster wheel is on. I usually only remove the top spring until after removal. Remove the two small fasteners that hold the pads to the hub assembly and pull them out with a twisting motion to twist out the emergency brake cable-end. Assemble the new pads in the same way as the ones removed then replace the opposite of removal. Be sure to work on only one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference in case of any confusion.
