How did the Cold War during the 1970's affect changes in homeland security?

The department of Homeland Security, as such, did not exist until after the 9.ll attacks in 200l, so you are putting the cart before the horse. True there have always been such things as Civil Defense ( Bomb squads, air-raid wardens and related), Police anti-terrorist units- again Bomb squads, and agencies such as the F.B.I. and others that had assignments or tasks that were directly related to what we would now calle Homeland Security, but that term, as a Government agency- did not exist until 200l, likewise, certain television dramas to the contrary- there was no F.B.I. in the Wild West- there were, however Federal Marshals.

What were some of the ways Europe Asia and Latin America use the policy of containment?

The term containment has been and can be used for anything; the containment of a disease; the containment of water; containing a fire. Or containing a criminal in a building until he is either overtaken or surrenders to law enforcement. Containment was used in Europe, Asia, and Latin America to contain problems encountered by those regions. During the cold war the "term" CONTAINMENT was used to control communism. That was a name used to prevent the spread of communism. Military force was used to prevent that spread. Either by just showing up and letting them see the military force; as happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Or by actually USING the military force by killing them in war; as happened in the Korean War and Vietnam War.

Explain the connection between the dropping of the bomb against Japan and their attack on Pearl Harbor 4 years earlier.?

Pearl Harbor was the first punch of the fight. The A-Bombs were the last punches of the fight. Pearl Harbor started it. The A-Bombs finished it. Note-Prior to Nuclear Weapons: Man has always fought wars all out. No limitations; Fight to win. Chemicals, Fire, Biological (Germ Warfare), Machinguns, Tanks, Battleships, Submarines, Airplanes, Hand Grenades, Giant Cannons, ANYTHING! JUST WIN!!! Just "Win" was when the Atomic Bombs were invented, in 1945. The "Atomic Age" CHANGED EVERYTHING. Now if Man fights to win, and the other country also has Atomic Weapons, then the war will result in "Mutual Destruction!" There will be NO WINNER. The ATOMIC AGE began in 1945; and resulted in the COLD WAR. The Cold War was a NON-Shooting war; in which both Nuclear Armed Countries said to each other, "I won't push our button, if you don't push your button" (For firing nuclear missiles at each other). The Cold War was a "Stand Off." The men that fought in WWII never heard of such a thing as the Cold War, or Nuclear Weapons, or Atomic Bombs...they were used to fighting to win. So they used a weapon that they NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE, the atomic bomb. After they used it, few of them ever wanted to see that weapon ever used again.

What two spy cases increased fear of communism in the US?

What was once a part of Russia before it was sold to the US?

Several states, such as Arizona, were part of territories that also formed other states (Arizona was part of the New Mexico territory, and Washington part of the Oregon territory).

However, only four states have been created from existing states. West Virginia and Kentucky were both split off from Virginia: Kentucky in 1790 and West Virginia during the Civil War. Most of Tennessee consists of areas once part of North Carolina, which were split into the Southwest Territory from 1790 to 1796. The state of Vermont was originally claimed by both New Hampshire and New York. Its residents established an independent republic from 1777 to 1791, when it became the 14th US state.

George Kennan's recommendations in 1947 on US reaction to communist expansion have been called the?

containment policy

In his famous"X" paper, Kennan wrote how communism needed to be"contained" where it existed and disallowed from spreading. The Truman Administration adopted the policy of containment in the late 1940s, with the goal of stopping communist expansion wherever it could in the world.

What effect did cold war fears have on domestic policy?

Each lynching harmed foreign relations, and "the Negro problem" became a central issue in every administration from Truman to Johnson. In what may be the best analysis of how international relations affected any domestic issue, Mary Dudziak interprets postwar civil rights as a Cold War feature. She argues that the Cold War helped facilitate key social reforms, including desegregation

What actress went to visit a prisoner of war camp in North Vietnam and had dinner with Ho Chi Minh during the Vietnam War?

What is known, is that actress Jane Fonda went to N. Vietnam and was photographed sitting on a North Viet anti-aircraft gun, (allegedly cheering on the AAA crews as they shot at US jets over-head; although this may have been a form of embellishment as the story & photograph was spread around thru-out the nation). However, the picture itself was printed on the front pages of newspapers.

Known from then on as "Hanoi Jane", talk was ripe about bringing her up on "treason" and "aiding the enemy." But she was saved, as no declaration of war had been signed between the warring nations (US vs N. Vietnam). If there had been a formal declaration of war signed, "Hanoi Jane" might very well have been brought up on charges.

Note: WWII was America's last formally declared war. Atomic weapons have effectively negated "declared wars" as they infer "total war"; and total war implies the use of all weapons in order to win the war. All weapons would mean nuclear war.

How did a local struggle in Vietnam turn into a major event of the Cold War?

Two different topics/questions here; "Local Struggle..." and "Major event of the cold war..."

1. The VN War wasn't a local struggle. It involved the world powers and potential atomic war.

2. Any SHOOTING war during the cold war was a major event.

How was West Berlin formed?

After Germany surrendered it was decided that Berlin, located entirely in East Germany, would be occupied by four Allied powers. The USSR administered the eastern part of the city, and the US, Great Britain, and France administered the western part. This arrangement quickly broke down and the USSR tried to force the Western Allies out by closing the land routes to Berlin. The city was then supplied entirely by air (The Berlin Airlift) for a time until the Soviets agreed to reopen the roads. To prevent East Germans from fleeing to the West, the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, and it divided the city until 1989.
