Why did West Berlins location make it difficult for the allies to defend it?
Germany was divided, after WWII, into two- East and West Germany. The East belonged to the USSR and the West belonged to the allies. Berlin (the capitol of Germany) was also divided. (Of course the West half goes to the allies and east to the USSR) But Berlin was located in the USSR's side of Germany.
Later the Soviet Union closed off the airports in their half of Berlin to try and get the allies to leave, so of course the allies' planes couldn't land there to defend West Berlin.
What was the Soviet Union trying to accomplish with the Berlin blockade?
The Soviet Union was hoping to drive the western allies out of Berlin, so they could occupy the whole city which was located 128 miles deep inside East Germany. The Soviet Union never like the arrangement after World War II to have the city of Berlin divided among the allied governments. I also think that the Soviets felt they deserved to occupy the entire city because of the tremendous losses they suffered taking Berlin from the Nazis. Over 300,000 Russians were killed taking the city.

Depends on the view point of the USSR. Most Soviet people and citizens found him a good leader and in May, 2013 a poll showed around 60-70% of the population found he was the best leader in all of Russian history and around 50% would today have elected him as their leader. He was responsible for a large increase in the Soviet Economy and while doing so keeping the military budget at a level to rival the US. To the west he isn't that popular due to his invasion of Afghanistan and the military budget. It all depends on the view point you are following.
