Communication

Communication is how we send messages to each other. It can be wordless, like body language. It can be written like a letter or message. It can also be spoken. Communication is very different from one situation to another.

What is the role of cohesive devices in making a text?

Cohesive devices are typically single words or phrases that basically make the text hang together. By analogy, they are much like the seams in our clothing which keep items like jackets and trousers together. Three elementary examples of cohesive devices are word repetition, synonyms and pronouns.

Word repetition

Example: The problem with text linguistics is that it is not easily understood by most people. Text linguistics is a relatively new field in linguistics that necessitates a shift in focus from the word and sentence level to the whole text level.

In the first sentence, the noun group "text linguistics" appears again in the second sentence which is repetition of the same lexical item. This recurrence of the same lexical item adds to the text's overall cohesiveness. It would be incoherent to start talking about something else other than text linguistics in the second sentence.

Synonyms

Example: My favourite city in the world is San Francisco. The capital is world renown for its clam chowder which attracts tourists from all over the world.

In the second sentence "the capital" functions as a synonym for city. Although the second sentence could begin with "city" the synonym used adds word variety to the text, helping the reader stay focused and interested in the idea being discussed.

Pronouns

Example: Baywatch is a TV show produced in America. It has been translated into more than 150 languages.

In the second sentence "it" refers back to Baywatch. It would be redundant to have the second sentence begin with Baywatch.

There are several other cohesive devices of course. If you'd like to read about them I recommend Beyond the Sentence by Macmillan (2005).

How does improper grammar affect communication skill?

"The ability to communicate is not the same thing as the ability to use "proper" grammar; knowing proper grammar merely allows you to express ideas in ways that are acceptable to a certain class of people ("register"), or to control the nuances of grammar to convey things subtly. But communication skills can be quite good even if one's grammar isn't perfect (or if one isn't a native speaker of the language in question). Communicative competence means someone has the ability to make him- or herself understood, despite technical shortcomings in grammar. Good grammar is not a prerequisite per se for communicative competence."

Grammar is an important essence to communication because it helps structure are sentences and it can help in how well we communicate. One who has good writing (grammar: "syntax", "pragmatic", "semantics") is an effective communicator because they will usually be able to catch on to the social rules which help us communicate. If one has poor grammar, they will not be able to communicate effectively, (they will say the wrong things or not make sense to the speaker), some grammar errors are okay during communication but some aren't, take saying "Hey how's a going", that sounds right but when you say "going hey how's a" notice how they do not make any sense, the other speaker may reply with (depending on how you communicate), "What are you trying to tell me"/or "what are you trying to say", * more better grammar gets the message accross clearer", "What mean I, me I asking try question". * Said the wrong thing communicated poorly there to (semantics/syntax error), "Huh", * Other person walks away. Notice how using improper grammar can impact or social communication skills, it makes it harder to socially communicate with someone that's why when we get in communication situations whether it's with a client or someone you know, that's why you have to use proper grammar because the listener may get annoyed with you and walk away /or cause of an misunderstanding make fun of you. However since pragmatics/semantics (social rules) are implied in communication, that's why you have to communicate effectively and alter between what to say lets say you're in science class and you talk to someone and you don't relate to them very well than that means you have a social communication problem, kids with A.D.D. do this and lots of misunderstandings happen and than they get made fun of or sometimes it's saying stupid things, but grammar and it's subtypes (pheno-sub types of grammar syntax, pragmatics semantics) are important because they dominate communication. However social situations (social communication reciporical between multiple people) is not for use of grammar because they don't usually care what you say, but if you communicate with people whether it's persuasion always use proper grammar or sub-types of grammar and if you can't socially interact (have trouble with social situations) than get involved in communication situations, I don't involve myself in groups anyway cause they are bad usually some are good, but remember each grammatical/communication situation is different so you are expected to act differently upon the situation, good grammar and that can also help you get a job man since you have to do a 1-1 interview (communication situation) and you write a resume (grammar) both involve grammar and pragmatics so remember, practice! Practice it (grammar to communicate effectively)! and when you have good grammar you will communicate like a pro and if you can can't socially interact don't bother way tougher situations anyway, most involve communication more especially when you wanna hook up with hot girls or make a friend.

How do you have non verbal communication?

The eyes are the windows of our souls and we can show love to a person through our eyes and also through body language. Looking into each other's eyes and laying close together or hugging, kissing or carressing are ways to show someone you care without saying a word. If you are talking about friends in general a smile at a remark someone says that you find amusing, a nod, a hug when they are in pain or grief are all ways to communicate without words.
