you'll need a new themostat, (preferably 180 degree) a new thermostat gasket, a 12mm socket with wrench and exstension. drain the coolant via the radiator, remove the two bolts from the thermostat housing, remove old thermostat, clean thermostat housing top and bottom, insert new thermostat(twist both ways and determine the center of operational clearances, generally bulk of sheat metal facing southeast if you are standing in front of the car) line up thermostat gasket on lower housing, place upper housing on lower housing, inset bolts and torque them to 20 psi.

Its just right of the intake manifold. About an inch to be exact. Easy to get to...be careful though, there is a fragile vacuum line attatch to the egr valve. If its old and dry, the line will break. I know, I just broke mine today 03-08-07...

For 1990-94 vehicles, remove the battery and battery tray from the engine compartment. For 1990-94 vehicles, detach the speedometer cable connector from the transaxle. Detach the starter motor electrical connections. Unfasten the starter motor mounting bolts, then remove the starter from the vehicle. Clean both surfaces of starter motor flange and rear plate. Install the starter motor onto the engine and secure with the retainer bolts. Tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the accompanying figure. Attach the electrical harness connector(s) to the starter. If removed, install the intake manifold stay and tighten the retainers to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). For 1990-94 vehicles, attach the speedometer cable to the transaxle. Install the battery tray and battery. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables. Operate the starter to assure proper operation.

Plug being on the drain pan is only true for an automatic transmission and yes there is one there. If it's automatic turbo it has 2 drain plugs on/near the pan and non turbo automatic there is on drain plug on the pan.
The manual tranny drain plug on a 2g dsm turbo is a single bolt on the inside of the tranny (opposite side of the where the cv axle attaches) near the crossmember. The tranny drain plug for a non turbo dsm is on the bottom part of the transmission and is also a single bolt.
