Emissions and Exhaust Systems

Internal combustion engines have byproducts called emissions. These byproducts are either particulates or gaseous chemicals. Emissions travel from the engine via an exhaust system, which is a system of pipes that leads the emission away from the combustion source.

Can burning oil clogged exhaust cause smoke?

yes burning oil smokes if the exhaust is clogged the motor will not run so if you suspect a lot of oil in the exhaust the engine needs serviced

What is a emission system?

Is it normal for white smoke to come out of the exhaust at startup of a 2000 Rav 4 when the weather is cold?

is there a sweet smell? Does the coolant level drop in the overflow tank and/or the radiator? if so, you might be looking at a bad head gasket. if there is slight white smoke(usually condensation) and no loss of coolant, then it is normal. once the engine (and exhaust system) gets hot, there should be no more smoke. if the smoke has a bluish tint it could be valve seals leaking. the best thing to do is take it to a garage just about when they close and leave the car with instructions to check the smoke coming from the exhaust the next morning. just about any tech. i know of can identify whether there is a head gasket leak, valve seal leak, or normal condensation burn off just by seeing it start cold!

Your 95 Toyota Avalon has a check engine light on and you cannot find source of problem?

Pull the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self test the computer runs the car through, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related. If you are unable to do this, take it to an independent repair shop and have them do it for you. We just called our mechanic yesterday about the same problem. He said that since he had just installed a new belt, the problem might be that we didn't screw the gas cap on tightly. After fixing the problem it could take 200 miles before the light goes off.

After you start your 1992 Chevy Cheyenne the exhaust smoke is horrible what causes this?

Blue smoke at startup, that clears up within a few minutes is normally cause by worn valve seals. Blue smoke that continues is oil burning. Black smoke is fuel burning from an overly rich fuel mixture. White smoke is normal at startup, especially during the winter, but if it does not dissipate rapidly, it can be a sign of coolant entering the combustion chamber. If it is coolant, it will smell sweet, you will be loosing coolant, and this is a sign of serious trouble. Usually a blown head gasket or cracked/warped head. First is what you call smoke BLUE, BLACK, or like FOG or STEAM ??? Black smoke usually fuel Blue smoke usually oil Steam/Fog usually water or coolant Now , the big question is whats the cause? Flooding fuel injector?, Worn piston rings?, Blown head gaskets?

What does it mean when exhaust is blowing black and blue smoke?

Black and blue smoke means your engine is burning oil. That is bad. You may have a blown head gasket. That is very bad. You may have worn piston rings. That is also bad. I have no idea why your engine is burning oil but the reason is bad.

Is it hard to change exhaust manifold?

This largely depends upon the condition of the mounting studs. If they are clean, it's easy; if they are bad enough, they might require cutting off and new studs.

Why would gas come out of the exhaust pipe?

Don't want to doubt you, but I'd definitely check to make sure it feels lightly oily or even soak some a few drops into a paper towel and see if it ignited (careful of course). Assume it's not running rough / missing occasional firings, right?

This can also be caused by a defective fuel pressure regulator. (Ford Ranger)

Why is my 89 ford bronco hard to start and have small puffs of white smoke?

The white smoke could be caused by coolant leaking into the combustion chamber, though a cracked head or bad gasket.

What could cause a windshield to have thousands of tiny pinpricks only visible when driving towards sun first noticed after auto body work on hood?

Could be several things. Sand pits from driving, you should have noticed it before. If the body shop used a sander on the hood it could have thrown grit at the windshield. Could be overspray from painting. I would expect the body shop to claim it was pitting from driving and not their problem. If overspray it is their problem. If it is pitting from their sanding it is hard to prove.

Mystery solved two weeks later: It was apparently clear-coat overspray. I used Clay Magic Fine Grade Detailing Clay, which removed most of it.

How do you clear the check engine light on a 1989 Dodge Caravan?

How long is a Ford explorer driving cycle?

Apparently you can "trick" a reset by doing the following procedure;

1. The gas has to be between 1/4 and 3/4 full. Not above or below.

2. Start the vehicle and put it in drive and hold the brake.

3. Turn on the air conditioner and the rear defroster.

4. Sit in drive for 2 minutes.

5. Turn off AC and rear defroster.

6. Drive the vehicle up to 55 mph.

7. Decellerate down to 20 MPH, do not touch the gas or the brake.

8. You must do this 3 times and let the vehicle get cold between cycles.

What causes too much fuel to the amount of air getting black smoke think that is why?

Black smoke in your exhaust is a sign of your car burning oil. You should have a qualified mechanic inspect your car and make the proper adjustments.
