Microsoft Essentials did not detect it since it is not a virus. Malwarebytes anti-malware did detect it but repeated attempts to remove it failed. It cannot be removed from the control panel remove programs - it does not even show up there. I removed most of it (121 of 125 items relating to it) by restoring the computer to a prior restore point. I deleted the other 4 items manually. I believe I have eliminated it.
