the wiring in contours, mystiques and cougars where all buggy. things blow fuses because they ground out. check for bad connections with a multimeter.

I think there is a button on the gear shift and it was probabley bumped and shut the over drive on your transmission off.

I too have had this happen...but it doesnt do it anymore...

I had this problem on a 2001 sephia it turned out to be a transmission problem

try replacing your vehicle speed sensor in the transmission, that should take care of the problem.

My O/D off indicator light was flashing, and I found a part on the fire wall that has a few electrical wires and two vacuum hoses attached to it, one of the connectors for the hoses was broken, when I rigged the hose to stay connected, ( couldn't just buy the part, because I have yet to find anyone that knows what it is) the O/D light quit flashing and my O/D button on my gear shift started working

Check the transmission fluid, if you check trouble shooting in the manual that's where you start.

I have a 98 Contour GL and wanted to install a woofer in the trunk, so needed to run wires, finally after lots of searching found out how to remove the back seat.

The Bottom part of the seat, is in place simply by two plastic clamp things(sorry don't know the name of the part) i found that you just have to pull and fiddle around with them for it to release, they are toward the front and sides of the seat, the rear of the bottom seat cushion is more or less held in by the belts.

You will need a torx bit for removing the seat belts, and removing the seat back.

after removing seat belts and freeing the bottom cushion, that can be taken out, and you will then see two torx bolts on either side, remove those, and the seat back will remove somewhat easily. there is a torx bolt in the middle, that is for a metal support beam.

This isn't all that technical of a description, but hopefully this helps you out.

we could not find it for all the hours we spent looking on the Internt for the answer. It took 10 minutes to get it at the auto parts store.

It could be a lot of things. The first thing I would check is the fuel filter and the air filter. These are inexpensive and rather easy to replace. I would also have your fuel injectors cleaned, which is also inexpensive. Don't right off low tires either though, as low tires can hurt your gas mileage. If these don't work, then there could be several possibilities. A bad EGR valve could do this, the ECM, or any of the parts of your fuel system.

You take it to the shop.

im no mechanic but that happened to me ,,i tuned it with after market wires/plugs and it didt help ,,,put ford factory wires and plugs no more problem

Fuel filter replacement for the 1995-1997, 1998 Ford Contour (4 Cyl 'Zetec' 16V and 24v Duratech V6) Fuel filter is located under the passenger side of the car in front of the rear wheel. Time: 5-10 min Tool needed: One flat head screwdriver Replace this filter is fairly easy. First, have a replacment filter and absorbent material as this will spill some gas. Suggestion: Remove black caps from new fuel filter. Have those handy when removing old filter. You can use them to cap the gas that will flow out of the old fuel filter, thus saving you a small mess. Also, take a good look at how the old fuel filter looks attached. Replace the new fuel filter with the same side (IN-OUT) The fuel filter is attached via a simple screw cable. Unscrew the cable to loosen the fuel filter (It will not detach by itself). Give it enough slack to pull out once you are ready. Next ,using screwdriver, pop-off white plastic retaining clips. Remove front and rear fuel line. Replace with new filter. Connect fuel lines. Connect white retaining clips on both sides (There will be some play on the connection, but that's normal). Screw the screw cable so filter is connected firmly (Do not overtighten and make sure screw nut is visible so you can see it the next time you need to replace filter. Double check your connections. Turn the ignition to ON for 5 seconds - but do not turn the car on. This will allow the fuel pump to push gas through the filter. Turn ignition OFF. Check to see if there is leakage. If no, turn car's motor ON. --Done--

take the lower radiator shield off under the passenger side below the lower radiator hose should be where the plug is and u can take it out with a flat head screw driver

Sounds like the tranny is gone, you'll need to replace it/have it replaced or rebuilt.

take off the plastic covers under the front of the engine. then you will see a small hose on the passnger side of the car that runs down from the lower radiator hose around the passenger side of the engine. simply use pliars to loosen the clamp and pull off that hose. make sur to have a bucket there, and the fluid won't drain good until you remove the radiator cap under the hood.
