Ford Contour

Can Can any animals such as mice, chimpmunks, squirrels get into your chimney or any othe vent opening? Occasionally these things find a way in, usually down the chimney, get trapped and die. Other possibilities include a pet consistiently urnating by a register or return grill, or standing or stagnet water that has been spiled or leeched in and created some variety of mold. If possible check you chimney where it meets the exhaust from your furnace or gas water heater, remove your air filter and inspect as much visually and scent to determine the area. You can try putting an air freshner (like the ones for cars). If all else fails call a chimney sweep or heating/cooling shop.

Remove the air hose running from your air filter box to your throttle body. There will be a small line going from your firewall into the fuel rail. About midway from the firewall there will be a valve stem, like you see on your tires. Unscrew the cap and depress the valve core, this will release any air trapped in the line and allow the fuel to flow.

The cooling fan relay for a 1999 Contour should be in the fuse box under the hood. It is close to the battery, and the lid should show the location of the relay.

According to the 1997 Ford Contour Owner Guide ( 5W-30 )

With engine oil filter change :

The 2.0 liter four cylinder takes ( 4.5 U.S. quarts of 5W-30 )

The 2.5 liter V6 takes ( 5.5 quarts )

It is usaully in the glove box on most cars check in there, it should be a little round button

Looking up from under the car, the drain is located on the bottom right and corner of the radiator. A large flat blade screwdriver will be needed to turn the drain cap and allow fluid to be released. The drain cap can't be fully removed from the radiator so there is no worry that the cap will get lost.

sounds like your alternator has a bearing going bad,which in turn stops alternator charging properly and doesnt complete electric circuit have alternator tested on your vehicle

both have diagrams which clearly illustrate the belt and pulley alignment.

as for the alignment marks:

before you put the belt on, align the crank pulley key/keyway with the oil pump (on driver's side of motor, has alignment mark that looks like a dash - )

in aligning the camshafts, there are nice lines/marks on the gears themselves, but the marks they line up with are small dots on the black,steel timing belt covers between the gears and the heads.

on the belt, the dotted line goes on the crankshaft pulley (there is an alignment mark on the gear that lines up) the two solid lines align with the marks on the camshafts. the words on the belt should be readable to you if you are standing in front of the truck, facing the engine.

In the passenger compartment fuse panel :

( # 27 is a light blue color 15 amp fuse for the cigarette lighter )

Something is loose in the front end. Check the ball joints and tie rod ends first. If one of these breaks while moving then the vehicle will go an any direction it wants to until it stops.

Check the Vehicle Emissions Control Information ( VECI ) decal , located in the

front of your engine compartment

( it will show the type of spark plugs to use and the spark plug gap )

Instead of taking this somewhere to have it done (I just finished taking apart my steering wheel today, not easy unless you can move the wheel), call a locksmith, it will cost less money to get a key made than to have a mechanic work on it.

Check all fuses and fuel pump relay. Check the fuel pump inertia cutoff switch in the trunk.

It's pretty involved. You can follow the instructions from this site. I ended up taking it to a garage and had someone do it because I got stuck at one of the steps. To get the alternator out you have to take apart the entire passenger side wheel assembly. Pieces wouldn't come apart anymore. (Just as a side note, this is the worst car I've ever worked on.) most snapped timing belts will in most cases cause engine damage,the only exception would be a freewheeling engine were valve to piston contact would be minimal an interference type engine would cause damage.

Any engine will lose RPM going up a hill, its called gravity and the engine has to overcome it. The heavier the vehicle the more RPM you lose. Thats also why transmissions have all the extra gears. Lower gear equals more pulling power and less speed, higher gear is less pulling power and more speed.

Connected to the bell housing. Fllow the wireing and you will find it.

To properly align the timing belt you will need a good repair manual with all the instructions. You will also need to buy from Ford (if you can get it) a special fixture to lock the camshafts in the proper position. I made my own by grinding down a piece of 1/4 inch aluminum to the ,200 inch thickness required. The approx size & pictures are in my Haynes manual. If youa re thinking of changing the belt be forwarned it is not an easy job as you have to jack up the frot of the engine & remove the front motor mount to gain access to the housings just to get at the belt. A lot depends on what may be misaligned & if it is the first time the belt is being replaced a special kit will be needed from Ford.

There are several things that could cause this. First I would check the radiator fan relay, then the fan switch, and the temperature sending unit, and finally the fan itself. Although there are other things that might cause this symptom, because the car is cooling when the heater is on points to a bad high/low relay where the fan is only coming on because the heater kicks the relay to hign and thus cools the car this could also happen with the AC being turned on. If code p01750 or p0751 it the solenoid sensor in the transmission. Take the pan cover off(bottom-front right side of transmission. It's right there bolted in with a wire harness protruding to the top of the transmission case. You'll have to remove the battery and its tray first. This sensor controls your shifting electronically.
