Does a 97 Ford Thunderbird have a distributor cap and rotor?
The 3.8 liter V6 engine has a distributor cap and rotor in a 1997 Ford Thunderbird
Could be: corroded throttle cable, (sticking). Replace.
Could be: defective throttle cable. Replace.
Or, could be: broken, loose and/or defective throttle return spring. Make sure the anchor point of spring is in place. The sping is located on the throttle body itself (coiled type) and must not spin around, but be held in place at one end.
Maybe it's a problem with the throttle plate sticking in the bore of the throttle body. Tricky fix. Probably best to remove and renew the componet, otherwise the problem, that is if this is the problem, might come back. Remove the air-intake snorkle and visually inspect that the throttle plate opens and closes with no indication of binding whatsoever. Ah, do this with the engine off. Open the plate all the way and rub your finger on the bore of the throat. It must be smooth, with no ridge nor pits, scratches and what not.
Could be: idle air control motor needs cleaning or replacemnet. Possibly sticking open, but I doubt it.
If the engine is suffering from a vacuum leak, this could be the reason for a fast idle. From your description of the complant I would say that said leak would have to be of considerable size. Check brake booster line. PCV hose.
Could be: linkage under dash to gas pedal. Binding? Bent? How's the throttle cable look going through the firewall?
During normal operation, with no problems, the car's computer will increase the engine idle speed during cold starts to allow for faster warm-ups. I'm not sure, but I think this is a timed event, programed to last less than 60 seconds by the engine management computer. Or by Coolant Temp. Sensor (CTS) readings. Service Engine light on? Check for trouble codes. If the CTS is defective the engine will remain in Open Loop and possibly not stabalize to a normal idle rpm. When you do start it up cold, does it idle fast then drop? If the above mentioned possible reasons have been exhausted, explore engine management systems, i.e. defective computer. Probably not though.
Cold be: defect in the mechanical aspects of the cruise control. Linkage, cable, chains. Vacuum motor binding. May not be allowing the throttle to close properly.

Why does the transmission shift not release with the brake in your 1997 Ford Thunderbird?
A likely cause is the brake pedal switch. It is on the brake pedal shaft. The switch must close when you step on the brake to shift the transmission from Park to other gears. The switch itself can be bad and must be replaced or one or more wires to the switch may be broken. My 1997 Ford Thunderbird would not shift out of Park until I found a broken wire and reconnected it. The entire switch can be removed to remove small broken wires from the switch that cannot be reconnected. Longer wires can then be inserted into the switch in order to splice the switch wires to the car wires. The correct size Crimp connectors and a Crimping tool would be good for a wire splice. Wrap the splice with rubber tape, not vinyl plastic tape. DISCONNECT THE NEGATICE GROUND CABLE TO THE BATTERY BEFORE DOING THE WORK. RECONNECT AFTER THE SPLICE IS COMPLETE.
What size bsttery for 1990 thunderbird 3.8?
It's a group 58 but any place that sells them can easily look it up, battery case sizes all have group numbers, ex-65, 75, etc. Any 58 w/correct post type (side or top terminal) and arrangement pos and neg on all batteries avail w/pos on right or left, and then you have choice of brand and if you want maint free or one where you occasionally have to check water.I never buy maint free- it's easy to add water and if you know how they are easier to charge because you need to be able to see water to most easily check charge
Is the Ford Thunderbird a muscle car?
By definition a muscle car is an inexpensive, light, and small car that has the largest engine possible installed. A muscle car is built for one thing: speed.
While a Thunderbird is a sporty vehicle it is more of a luxury car than a canyon carver or drag racer. Both the classic Thunderbirds and the modern 2002 and later models fit into this category.
How do you install front disc brakes on 1994 Ford Thunderbird?
If you have never installed brake pads, I suggest you go out and buy a repair manual. It will be more detailed than what I can explain here. My explanation is based on the fact that you have already done this at least once on any vehicle. I recommend that the rotors get turned. You may be able to get away without this procedure if the rotors are not warped or scratched but I don't advise it. Raise the car and support it on jackstands, never work with just a jack alone. Remove the tire, do one side at a time. This way, you will have the other side as a reference in case you forgot how the pads look while they are assembled. Remove only ONE bolt from the caliper assembly. The other bolt is covered by a rubber boot. DO NOT remove this boot or the bolt. (If you are turning the rotors, you will have to remove the whole caliper assembly and hang it out of the way. Remove the Caliper bracket and slide the rotors out. After the rotors are turned, re-install them before you continue.) Swivel the caliper up, use a screwdriver to "jimmy" it up if it's difficult. Take out the brake pads. Use a C-clamp to push back the calipers - the brake fluid will go back towards the Brake Master Cylinder. So be careful of spilling fluid. If the new pads have shims, install them. I recommend you use Anti-Squeak paste on the back of the pads. DO NOT apply this paste to the linings. You can also buy the spray on type Anti-Squeak for better and more even coverage. Follow the directions on the Anti-Squeak. Re-install the pads, swivel the caliper back into place, and retighten the bolt you removed making sure you torque it to specs. Press the brake pedal several time to seat the new pads. Make sure to bleed the braking system. Starting with the Rear right tire, then the Rear left, then the Front right, and lastly the Front left. Always use new brake fluid and have extra for a complete bleeding process. Make sure that you constantly check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. If air gets in the lines, you will have to re-start the bleeding process again from the beginning. Good luck!
How do you install a serpentine belt on a 1994 Ford Thunderbird LX 4.6 V8?
there should be a belt route diagram on the front of the car when you open your hood right where it gives the firing order,a/c, and other engine specs at. if not haynes manuals from autozone will have the diagram. all cars have the diagram under the hood , but its just a sticker so sometimes they fall off or become unreadable over the years.but it should be on the piece of metal right in front of your radiator.there will be a tention arm with a pully on it you will have to hold up while installing the new belt.some tentioners have a 1/2 inch square to put a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar in to pull the arm up.i just pry mine up with my tire tool.

How do you change the odometer cable on a 1995 Thunderbird LX?
== == It is plastic gear driven.
There is no cable as in earlier vehicles. Although the output shaft in the transmission still operates the speedometer and odometer, the plastic gear drives a sensor that is plugged into the wiring harness. On the other end, it's included in one of two large connectors that attach to the back of the instrument cluster. No cables!
