usally it is because of a cracked vaccume line(hose) from the intake manifold to the dash controls.usally heat makes the line crack-some vaccume canisters develope a crack in them - this will cause the same problem probably the vacum value connected to the vent controls. If there is a broken vacumn line or if the value is bad, it could cause this to happen

There is a bolt on the top and bottom of the INSIDE (back side, toward the engine) of the calipers. Remove these two bolts. Next, open your bleeders on the caliper to release the pressure from the brake lines. Your calipers will slide away, either forward or backward from the rotor. You may need to use a screwdriver to help this along. The brake pads should drop out as you clear the rotor. Put your brake shoes back in the correct way (inboard/outboard). I didn't and darn near killed myself!

I would check the point gap and timing first. If that does not correct it, I would check the carburetor float level.

Spark plug wires - take a spray bottle of water & while the engine is running & it's dark under the hood - spray ABOVE the wires & U will C wich wire is bad!

IT'S NOT THE SPARK PLUG WIRES.I HAD MY TRUCK TOTALLY CHECKED OUT.DIAGNOSTICS TOLD ME IT WAS THE WIRES.I CHANGED THE WIRES.I USED MSD PERFORMANCE WIRES.IT STILL DOES IT.THE PROBLEM MAY BE IN THE TRANSMISSION.WHEN THE TRANNY WARMS UP AFTER A FEW MINUTES,THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARS.

I have the same truck only an XL. The inertia on the driver side outboard the parking brake. Mine is exposed but you may have a kick panel over it being an XLT.

This is a big job and if you want to do it get a manual on it and do it right. You will need torque wrench etc. I don't know about thermogasket. There is a chance the head is cracked but it has to be checked when off.
