How do you fix an Aveo that will not let you shift out of park?

Answer for shift lock sticking

I have an 04 Aveo and about 6 months ago my shifter would not get out of park unless you use the shift lock key. I found what the problem was by accident, but once I found the problem it makes total sense. Basically, one day I realized my brake lights were not going on, and after diagnosing the problem it appeared the brake switch was faulty. Once I replaced the brake switch, not only did it fix my brake light problem, but it also fixed my shifter problem. It's been about 5 months since the brake switch was replaced, and I never had the problem since. I think what was going on was since the brake switch was faulty, the car was not recognizing that you were pressing the brakes. Since you are not able to get the shifter out of park unless you are stepping on the brakes, it really makes total sense. But if I did not find this out by accident I don't know whether I would have been able to diagnosis it. I hope this is the problem you are having because it is a VERY cheap and easy fix - the switch is a $5 part and anyone can replace it.

After reading this, I was able to find and fix (although temporarily) the same problem with my daughter's 04 Aveo. Here is some more detail of the problem. First make sure that it is the brake switch by checking to see if the brake lights do not come on when the brake pedal is depressed. If the brake lights do come on, then the brake switch is OK - look elsewhere.

To remove the brake switch, slide the seat back and look above the curved bar to which the brake pedal is attached. The switch is black plastic with a white label with the letters WA in black. Disconnect the wires by firmly squeezing the white connector on the wide side and pull it off. To get the switch out of the metal bracket, rotate the switch 90 degrees and pull it out. To take the plastic switch case apart, pry apart at the parting line under the two triangles). Inside, there are two metal contacts. Push them out by pushing on the terminal blades from the end that the wires were connected. One of these two connectors is spring loaded on a flat spring and one is not. File the round disk connector pads (similar to ignition points). I found that the electrical resistance between the flat spring and its contactor disk was high, meaning that is was not properly closing the circuit - THE ROOT CAUSE!. So, I re-squeezed the riveted pad with a heavy duty pliers. The resistance (as measured with an ohmmeter) should go from infinity to 0 as the switch is activated. If this is the case, re-assemble, re-install, and then PURCHASE A NEW ONE. This is a dealer only part. Most auto parts stores can't get it for you. What we have done is a temporary fix.

What is the transmission fluid capacity of a Ford Windstar?

It all depends...

When you look at the Owners Manuals, you'll see transmission fluid capacity numbers in the range of 12-14 quarts.

BUT!

That's if the transmission is totally empty, and here's the clincher for us average types: including the torque converter.

For us average types, even when doing a transmission fluid / filter change, do not end up with an empty torque converter.

When you pull the transmission pan for the fluid/filter change, you end up with 4-6 quarts on average. The rest is still up inside the torque converter.

Measure what you drained and start with refilling that amount to put back in to return levels back to normal.

If you're adding fluid, simply use the dipstick - according to the illustrated instructions in the Owners Manual - and add what is necessary.

NOTE: This is one of the points of distinction to having the transmission "flushed" - where a professional shop is going to hookup specialized equipment to achieve a full fluid exchange.

Note #2: Many experts (like the guys on "The Car Show" radio program) assert that exchanging 50-60% of the fluids like would happen when doing a fluid/filter change is GOOD. The oil itself is not deteriorating so much as, what they call the "additive package" dissipates. So the percentage from doing the fluid/filter revives the "additive package" sufficient to support the long life of the transmission.

Why does your check engine light blink on and off and the engine start sputtering on your ford windstar 2003?

Check engine light on steady = have your vehicle checked.

If it is blinking = have your vehicle checked now.

=============================================

Just adding to the answer :

If your check engine light is blinking that means that an engine cylinder

misfire has been detected . You can drive it in for repair , just avoid any

rapid acceleration or deceleration because you can damage the catalytic

converter

What does the symbol on the dashboard of a 2001 ford windstar that looks like an engine mean?

it is your check engine light. If it is on you are having problems with normal operation of the engine. Most of the time it is something very simple and emission related. Normally it is an exhaust gas regulation valve(egr) or an oxygen(o2) sensor. Go to auto zone and ask them to scan it for you to get the code that your power train control module(pcm) will have stored. They should do it for you for free. If you take it to a dealer they normally charge about 35 to 50 dollars to use their scan tool.

Why did bigger cars have to have bigger steering wheels before power steering?

in my opinion, im pretty sure a bigger car has to have a bigger steering wheel because a tiny steering wheel would not be able to manuver a big car. great question though:)

hope i helped:) love, izzy

Answer 2Some of it has to do with the scale and dynamics of the vehicle, but it's mostly that a larger steering wheel has more leverage. It takes less effort to turn a larger steering wheel than a smaller one.

To turn a 15 inch diameter steering wheel half way around, it requires you to turn it about 24 inches. If that wheel was 25 inches in diameter, you'd have to turn it almost 40 inches. It's a bigger lever; you have to turn it more (further), but it is easier to turn.

Many older cars without power steering also had more 'turns' to the wheel, which gives the same advantage. My Honda maybe has three turns to the wheel - 'lock to lock' (from all the way left to all the way right). One of the earliest cars I drove may have had 10 turns to the wheel. I remember having to turn it about half way around just to change lanes.

What does it mean when your car just keep whirling over?

Starter solenoid is bad. I assume you mean engine turning over, not starting, but continuing to turn over after key is released. Disconnect battery cable from post, then replace starter solenoid.

Your sliding door 2003 Ford Windstar is out of alignment The bottom of the door is not flush with the trim How do you realign it?

To realign the sliding door on your 2003 Ford Windstar, start by examining the hinge and roller assembly for any visible damage or wear. Loosen the hinge bolts and adjust the door's position until it sits flush with the trim, then retighten the bolts. Additionally, check the roller assembly for proper alignment and ensure it moves smoothly along the track. Finally, test the door to ensure it opens and closes properly after adjustments.
