How do you re-start a Ford Windstar after running out of fuel?

My wife just ran my 2001 out of gas the other day - all I did was put about a half gallon in the tank and it started right up.

You may need to cycle the key to the ON position 4 or 5 times - without starting the engine - this allows the fuel pump to re-pressurize the line.

If that doesn't do it, double-check the emergency fuel shutoff switch in the back right corner of the "way back" - in the same compartment as the tire jack.

How do you drain and fill the engine coolant anti-freeze on a Ford Windstar?

  • REMINDER: Make sure the engine is COLD BEFORE opening the cap

Cooling System- Drain and Fill

Ensure that the engine is completely cool prior to starting this service.
  1. Remove the recovery tank / coolant reservoir or radiator cap.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Place a drain pan of sufficient capacity under the radiator and open the petcock (drain) on the radiator.

Plastic petcocks easily bind. Before opening a plastic radiator petcock, spray it with some penetrating lubricant.

  4. Drain the cooling system completely.
  5. Close the petcock.
  6. Remove the drain pan.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Determine the capacity of the cooling system, then property refill the system with a 50/50 mixture of fresh coolant and distilled water.
  9. Leave the recovery tank or radiator cap off to aid in bleeding the system.
  10. Start the engine and allow it to idle until the thermostat opens (the upper radiator hose will become hot). The coolant level should go down, this is normal as the system bleeds the air pockets out of the system.
  11. Refill the system with coolant to the proper level.
  12. Turn the engine OFF and check for leaks.

Look for a drain petcock. If there is none, then simply remove the lower radiator hose.

The heater in your 2000 ford windstar van blows cold air?

If there is, or has been a bumping noise coming from behind the radio when changing the temperature setting, it is likely the blend door actuator has failed.

There is a Related Question linked below that provides detailed information on replacing this part yourself.

If it's not the actuator motor, the actual blend door may be broken. This is a very common problem in the Windstars. Typically the dash must be disassembled and the plenum box removed to access the blend door. I tried another method with the heatertreater. It involved removing the glovebox and making an incision in the plenum box to replace the blend door. It saves a lot of time, check your actuator motor to see if it has the stripped gear issue first

1998 Ford Windstar Check engine light stays on all the time Van Runs fine but but when you stop after driving for 10 min it revs and doesnt go anywhere. What is wrong?

It strikes me you have 2, probably unrelated problems:

  • The check engine light - trying to let you know about some strange readings the computer has received from the sensors.

  • A transmission problem - sounds like it's slipping.
Easiest thing to check first is if the transmission fluid is okay
The key to diagnosing the *source of the problem* is to get the codes read.

The next most critical step is to research the codes - the codes are trying to tell about some strange readings the computer received. It the strange reading - for example "lean condition" bank1 - that will guide you to a true FIX.

NOTE: don't go out and replace any sensors until you're confident the sensor has really truly *failed*

Once you have codes, check WikiAnswers and other sources for others who may have had the same readings and what solutions were offered.

What is the knocking sound coming from climate control system in 99 ford wind-star The heat and air conditioning work but it makes a terrible knock?

You have a faulty temp blend door motor, located behind the radio. It is the motor/actuator that controls the temperature blend door in the heater box. It isn't hard to replace, but it may be a little tricky to get to. You will need to remove the radio, and way back in there, you will see a square plastic thing mounted to the heater case, either black or off-white colored with one electrical connector and held on with three or four 8mm screws. Remove the screws with a long socket extension and replace the motor. If you drop anything, you can retrieve it by removing the lower trim panel around the base of the dash at the floor tunnel, which is held in place with 4 plastic screws.

The buttons on a factory vhs player in a ford windstar minivan has stopped working is there a fuse you need to change?

According to the Owners Manual, fuse #2 & #6 relate to the entertainment / VHS system.

See "Related Questions" below for more

If it is like my 2001 Windstar SEL, an Autovision VE6825 VHS player, the problem is caused by one or more of the four black wires breaking just where the top panel flips open. I opened mine up and soldered in a heavier gauge wire. It has nothing to do with fuses if the interior eject button still functions.
