Remove the actuator and watch it operate when adjusting the temperature control.
If it moves only in one direction it's broken. And obviously, if it doesn't move at all, it's broken.
With the actuator out, you can insert a small screwdriver into the blend door and operate it manually. Confirm it is moving smoothly end-to-end and not binding.

I am looking at the Ford service manual, and it doesn't say. But either one will be accessed the same way. Remove the left quarter trim, and look at the lines going into the evap core. If there is an expansion valve, you will see it right away on the inlet tube(small diameter tube). If there is an orifice, it will be located inside the inlet tube of the evap core, just like the front unit.

Hey Roseanne==First, jack up the wheel then remove wheel, then the caliper. Then remove the dust cap over the spindle nut. Then remove the spindle nut and pull the fub and rotor off of the spindle. If the races thst are in the hub are scored remove them with a punch and install new ones. Then replace the inner bearing and NEW seal and put on the car and replace the outter bearing and spindle nut. Torque the nut to seat the bearing then back it off until there is slight play in the bearing. Pack the bearings before you install them and don't put excess grease in between the bearings or in the dust cap. GoodluckJoe

Code 1401 is a backflow fault with the EGR valve. They get dirty with buildup and stick. Part is around $60.00 It is the round, disk shaped configuration located near the firewall. It connects into the intake manifold at the bottom of the EGR valve and a line connection at the top of the EGR valve. DIY is easy as long as you spray the nut on the bottom of the fitting to the intake first to free it.
It means that your PCM has detected something wrong with your egr system. Follow along and check what applies first. your egr system is something that recycles unspent gasoline vapors back into your engine.
fixing it will improve your mileage, and make you pass an epa test!!
possible causes of insufficient flow:
- bad dpfe sensor-notorious in fords for failing, it measures the pressure of the system
- clogged tubing from valve to vacuum- very possible, they twist and turn all over the place, a piece of carbon could easily get stuck in there
- bad evr (the vacuum pump that controls the whole thing) the little motor in the vacuum could have burnt out
- bad egr valve-highly unlikely, but possible
- cracked or leaking hose-first check the ones connected to the dpfe sensor itself.
- bad pcm-uh-oh. that's pricey. but unlikely.
first, check the hoses. then go to autozone and get a new dpfe. 20 bucks. then clean out all ports, then test the vacuum.
