96 Honda passport engine light blinks and car shakes whats the problem?
The engine light is blinking because the engine is misfiring, ie the fuel is not detonating in the cylinder as it should... There are multiple causes for why this could be happening, too much or too little fuel, no spark, lack of significant compression or too much or too little air... These are the only components that you absolutely need to achieve proper combustion in an engine, this light blinking indicates that something is not taking place at the proper time or in the proper volume.
The light blinks because it is indicating that the condition taking place can cause significant damage to internal engine components, or your catalytic converter (dumping excess fuel into the converter will burn it up)
I would suggest immediately taking the car to a trusted repair shop.. Estimated cost for doing a basic tune up (starting point) is around $300, however, don't be surprised if the estimate is significantly more if other engine mechanical problems exist... Do a little research, and find someone who knows what they're talking about (who really knows, not just one of those guys who can BS really well). If you can't explain the idea to someone, the repair shop hasn't explained the problem clear enough to you, don't be afraid to ask questions.
Good luck

How do you check the transmission fluid on a 1996 Honda Passport transmission?
It is a Sealed- Non Servicible system and the transmission fluid is a type that does not break down over time so the only reason you would need to is if there was a leak but then you should just take it to your dealer.
This sounds like the answer a dealer would give. You can take out the over-flow plug and check it with your finger. If you can't reach any put more ATF-z1 in until it starts to trickle out of the over flow hole. Once it is done coming out, you know it's full.

What type of transmission fluid for a 2000 Honda Passport?
honda passport's transmissions were made by GM , only use a dexron 3 (if you can find it) the alternative would be a dexron 6 ( works great on mine.)
It's working a lot harder when you're pulling a trailer, so it will always run hotter. If it's overheating, you might be pulling more than it's rated for. Otherweise, check your coolant system. If you haven't flushed it out in a few years, it's probably time.
Beyond the fact that the engine is working harder most of the 97-2004 f-150's use a small transmission cooler in conjunction with a system that runs transmission fluid through the radiator to cool it. When towing the transmission fluid gets VERY hot when shifting gears. Make sure you have the overdrive switched off to prevent unnecessary shifting. If you plan on doing a lot of towing it is highly recommended to add a large external transmission cooler. You can still have the fluid run through the radiator if you'd like or you can separate the systems all together. If you choose to separate the systems all together you need to add a transmission temperature gauge as the only warning that the transmission is overheating in the current configuration is that the radiator gets too hot.
Hope this helps.
