To be able to answer it in a helpful way we'd need to know more about the 'shy girl' in the question and how she'd react to your mom being ill and you not doing 'much'.
If you're not dating then you don't actually need to do anything for this shy girl and her opinion, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. The most I can say is that she'll most likely be sympathetic of your situation but also still slightly miffed that you haven't 'done much'.
