How do you fix a car trunk lock that seems to have shifted upward?

I don't know if this is the problem you are having, but if your trunk won't latch properly because the latch won't reach the U-shaped hook it latches onto, it may be that it is the hook rather than the latch that has moved. I had this problem with my car. The hook, which is connected to the car with two screws, had moved down over time so that the latch would no longer reach it. Even though the latch was working fine, the trunk wouldn't close because there was too much distance between the latch and the hook. I solved the problem on my car by simply loosening the screws on the hook, sliding the hook up and retightening the screws. .

How do you remove the starter on a 1995 Pontiac Firebird 5.7 ltr?

If you need to see the pictures go to http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c152800b83b2 REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 2 and 3 3.4L and 1993-95 5.7L Engines

# Disconnect the negative battery cable. # Raise and safely support the vehicle. # If necessary for access to the starter, disconnect the exhaust crossover pipe from the manifolds. # Unfasten the two starter mounting bolts/screws and carefully lower the starter motor. Fig. 2: Use a ratchet and socket extension to loosen ...

Fig. 3: ... then remove the starter mounting bolts

# Making sure the note their positions, detach the electrical leads from the starter motor. Fig. 4: Loosen the retainers, then remove the wiring from the starter

# Remove the starter motor from the vehicle. Fig. 5: Carefully lower the starter motor from the vehicle

To install:

Before attaching the electrical connectors, tighten the inner nuts on the solenoid terminals. If the nuts are not tight, the solenoid cap could be damaged during installation of the leads. Tighten the inner nut of the "BAT" terminal to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). # Fasten the electrical leads to the starter motor assembly. Tighten the solenoid switch "BAT" terminal outer nut to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm) and the "S" terminal nut to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm). # Position the starter motor to the engine and install the retaining bolts/screws. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). # Measure the starter pinion-to-flywheel clearance and add shims, if necessary. # If removed, connect the exhaust crossover pipe to the manifolds. # Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable. Tighten the cable to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

Why would a 1997 Firebird 3.8 V6 not start or turn over but the radio and other electrics work.Fuel pump does not come on either.?

That my friend is the wonderful SECURITY system of GM, that little bump on your key has a resistor in it, when you put it in, if the security system doesnt read the proper value, due to various conditions -- worn contacts, dirty contacts, etc. This causes everything to work, except it will disable the starter and the fuel pump..neeto huh. To test if its this is the case simply put the key in, try to start it and then remove the key, if you see a SECURITY light on the dash lit up after you remove the key, then that is the problem.. it will wait 3 minutes before the light goes out and you can try again. The cheep fix for this is to buy a remote start kit from Kragen, as it simulates the resistor that is in your key -- they go for 24-40 bucks, lot cheaper than going to a dealer to have it fixed, or taking your steering column apart ...

How do you unscrew the rivets from a window motor on a 96 firebird?

you dont unscrew the rivets you drill them out and replace them with a screw iv been fixing them for years

Drill them out then try replacing them with screws, since nobody seems to carry window rivets but the dealer who charges ridiclous prices for four bloody rivets...

Additional InfoThe rebuilt window motor I got at NAPA had 4 bolts to fasten the motor to the regulator and 4 large rivets to fasten the regulator back to the door, all included in the box ($65). Now all I need is a really big rivet gun (these are too big for a standard rivet tool, like the one I have. If you do get one in, you have to disassemble the rivet gun to get it back out.)

What is the oil capacity on an 84 Pontiac firebird with a 4 cylinder also there is white residue inside the oil cap on top of the motor. what does that mean?

The oil capacity is probably around four to six quarts. If there is white residue inside the oil cap, then that means you either have a blown head gasket, or there is water getting into your engine block.

How do you replace the fuel pressure regulator on a 1998 38 firebird is it necessary to remove the fuel rail?

First you need a small mirror and a pair of small 45 degree internal snap ring pliers. On the back of the regulator housing, you look with the mirror and you will see the two small holes to the snap ring. reach the pliers around the outside of the coil pack with your right hand and hold the mirror back behind the regulator by stretching your left across the intake plenum. Once you get the snap ring out wiggle the regulator and it should come straight back out. Installation is reverse.

How much will it cost to replace a cracked taillight on a 1995 Pontiac Firebird?

A lot, depending on where you get it. I would encourage you to check junk yards, first. You can frequently find good parts from them and pay only a fraction of the cost. That lens, itself, may be a dealership only item, in which you'll be paying anywhere from $500-700 is my guess.

AnswerI watched eBay until I found a new tail light. I have a 96 TransAm.I was looking to replace only the leaker but found a great deal on a set of new lights on eBay. I bought the updated honeycomb pattern that started with the 97 model. I found a pair for I think $125 each ($250 for the pair). It really improved the look of the car as they tend to cloud with age. AnswerI cracked the passenger side tail light and found another in very good condition at the wrecker for about $100 I think the new ones cost $350+.

What causes code PO440 on 2002 firebird?

I found that the check engine light came on and with a code reader I read a PO440 which says "emissions controls system malfunction". I cleared the code and found that when I tried to get it inspected they said other things were not ready...ie-oxgen sensor, catalytic converter and emissions. They also said that you will have to drive for 100 or so miles to let the ECM register readings again. I kept clearing PO440 code but within 70-80 miles it would return. Same error code PO440. I was told by a mechanic that the evaporator cannister and valve was bad and it will have to be replaced. The labor alone would be over 700.00, the tank would have to be reomved and this was a very laborious job. I decided to go another route. I know I needed to get to the top of the tank. I began removing the carpet from the back of the firebird just in front of the trunk. I used a hacksaw and drill to get at the top left of the gas tank. I used a drill and moved very slowly, not to create any sparks, this was used to make sure I wasn't near any fuel lines. I then used a fine bladed hacksaw and cut into this area until I exposed the cannister. You will have to bend away the sheet metal, be careful the tin is very sharp. Once you have the cannister exposed, you will have to remove the electrical connector and the main hose clamp. Then pry off the hose and remove and replace the cannister. The cannister with electronic valve was 30.00 at GM dealer. I then cleared the code and drove for around 70-80 miles and then took it to be inspected.....it passed this time. By the way, the car was also running much smoother, idling better etc. There is another valve in front by the motor sitting on top of the intake, which I had already replaced earlier. It is easier to get to and it is just the electronic valve. This initially didn't solve the problem, which led me to believe it was the other one on top of the tank. This all ended up costing me 121.00 labor and a few cuts. 30.00 for cannister, 30.00 for the other purge control valve and a 4X4 door on my gas tank which I repaired with a piece of cardboard and duc tape. this was covered up by the carpet once all was finished.
