A bill of sale for most states should allow you to drive the vehicle to and from the DMV - if the registration is current you can chance driving the vehicle around until you get new plates in your name - if the vehicle is already in your name file for a duplicate title - if the vehicle is not in your name but was abandoned - file for an abaondned title and the DMV will send a letter to the last known owners.

The easy way to tell is to go to edmunds.com and look up your car and find out how much it is worth as a trade in and how much it should bring on the open market. Then decide if you want to put out that much effort for that amount of money. Also bear in mind that a dealer can get more money out of a vehicle than you can most of the time. While you are at it, find out how much your new car should be discounted if any. Really hot selling cars often bring more than retail while others might be discounted heavily.

Probably a state law issue. We have one car where the insurance is ion my wife's name and the car is in my name and nobody ever said anything. I would guess that in some states you can insure the car in your name and have it registered in your parents name but why? Just switch both at the same time and avoid a problem later. DMV and insurance regulations are really nasty in some states (like NYS) and they can suspend your license and you never even know it. Look on your states DMV site and call you insurance agent.

It depends on why it was totaled. If it's cosmetic damage that totaled the car (like a shallow sideswipe) of course. If it's structural, like frame damage, maybe. If it was in a flood, it's probably not a good idea to fix it since quirky electrical problems will haunt the car forever. If it is repaired it would still carry a totaled title but it can be qualified with the brand 'totaled/reconstructed' on the new title.

Auto dealerships have to comply with state and federal regulations as related to selling vehicles. These regulation cost them money in training and in compliance. Of course all dealers pass these costs on to the consumer. Some hide the costs in the price of the vehicle. Others will quote you are lower price than a dealer hiding these costs in the final price and then turn around and add them on in the final contract. Either way you will pay these compliance fees as they are just part of the dealers overhead.

Dealerships have 2 tactics they will use on you when you go to trade the car in. Either they will offer to buy your car for what you owe on it and then you end up paying more for your new vehicle OR they will pay you blue book value for your car (whatever it's worth at the time) and give you a fair deal on your new vehicle. Best bet: sell your car person to person, then use that money to pay off your loan and get the title to sign over to the new buyer. When that deal is done, shop around for new vehicles. Trade-ins are almost never worth it. You are always going to be upside down when you come away.

You can't. You can get a carfax report and it will tell you what has been happening and where it has been registered, but you cannot locate the car owners address.
