Will stopping payment on crashed rental car affect credit?

Credit? No. But if you crashed the rental car, then stopped payment on it you could be arrested and/or sued.

** sure it would- the company can send you to collections and that would be on your report- affecting your credit.

Does a name on the log book mean that person is the legal owner of the car.?

No, the owner of the vehicle is the person whose name appears on the title to the vehicle.

You returned a car you purchased because you could not pay for it?

That is called voluntary repossession. You will be required to pay the difference in what the lender sells the vehicle for and the balance on the note after that amount is applied to the loan. You did avoid repossession fees by voluntarily turning the car in. Your credit will also show this repossession for 7 years.

Can repo agents keep a copy of your car key?

They generally do not keep the keys, as it would be too many keys to keep track of. Each vehicle usually has a special code that can be used to cut a duplicate key for your vehicle. They do not need an original key to do so.

They can keep it, and I'm sure they would feel just as uncomfortable giving back your car without having a key to it. Car repossession is not the first thing that takes place, it's the last thing they do when all else fails.

They seem to think this may happen again and I am sure the key is not in the possession of the repo man, but the financial institution who hired him, for future use if necessary as they still hold a lien.

Most repo agents have master keys to vehicles. Each model and make have what is known as a master key that will work on all of them. Did you know that the key to your car may actually start another of the same year make and model?

NOT LEGALLY. Who would want the responsibility of having the key to a car they don't own?? What if it gets stolen?? The cops drag you in wanting to know where you were. MOST financial institutions DONT have keys to the cars they finance. Its all they can do to keep the paperwork straight so how could they keep up with keys?? Give me a break.

I own a repo company and each state has different laws for everything. you need to figure out what the laws are in your state. But in my state and probably many others as well I do not have a right to keep keys to a vehicle that isn't registered in my name or loaned to my buy the owners once the repossession has taken place. Not to mention I don't want them. After we get a car we move on to the next car we don't't dwell on the fact that we might have to get it again. If the lender is nice enough to give you a nother chance good for you, but stay on top of things our we will be back with or without your keys!

yes, some companies can use the key to decipher the actual code number, then give to the lien holder to keep on file, out here it ca, it comes in handy, most people out here get there car repo'd two separate times, sometimes three

Can a repo guy take a car off a trailer?

Is it legal to sell a car still under finance?

Selling a car under finance ( also known as a secured or mortgaged goods) is possible however many factors must be taken into consideration before doing so.

Reviewing the terms of the finance contract are essential given that a number of car financiers and banks may have clauses that require you to disclose the intent and have the vehicle released from its charge.

Legally ownership is not transfered without the agreement of the security being released by the finance company where the loan was secured and only after the loan has been settled.

Resale values will affect any sale of a car. Depreciasion and condition are the most obvious which will leave you with a shortfall being an outstanding balance, to clear the finance on the vehicle.

Private sales are most likely to gain the best sale price but wuill still leave you with a balance on the finance and therefore a liability.

By selling the car you do not transfer the ownership of the vehicle. This means that a finance company could reposess the vehicle if you default on the payments or do not pay the balance on demand, regardless of who you sold it to.

How much you can save paying a car in cash?

Depends on the vehicle you are buying and the dealer. Of course you will save the interest payments you would be making if you borrowed the money which are substantial.

Can you trade in your old car on which you owe 9000 for a cheaper car and payment?

First of all stop trading. You can almost always sell your car for more than you will receive on a trade. Unless you are upside-down on the car you own, you can just sell it and pay off the loan and then buy a cheaper car. If you do owe more than it is worth, then see if the lender will allow you to sell the car and then borrow enough to pay off the balance of the loan with enough left over to buy a beater car that will get you from point A to point B. Without a trade-in you can bargain better and purchase a better car for less money. Drive that beater until you pay it off and save enough to buy a better car. You probably won't take this advice but I will give it anyway. Never ever borrow money to purchase a car, and never buy a new car. Save your money and pay cash for a 2-3 year old car that has depreciated considerably. Let someone else take a beating those first couple of years. Just think of all the money you save by not paying interest on a car loan.

Can you take your car off the repo lot?

At that point it would be considered automobile theft. The car isn't yours any more once the Repo guy gets it. The lending institution has already taken action before they pick up the vehicle. Remember when you use a vehicle that is held as collateral for a loan, you do so with the agreement that you will continue to abide by the agreement of the loan and that while you have some rights regarding the vehicle, the lending institution also has rights. When you fail to meet the requirements the lending institution can have your rights to that vehicle terminated. Once the lending institution takes posession (through the repo company) you no longer have ANY rights to the vehicle. Stay away from the vehicle that was PREVIOUSLY yours. If you try to take it back you could go to prison. if you have properly redeemed it, yes. Any other way would be theft. If you are good and quick Good, quick, and don't mind spending 6-24 months in jail!!! On what evidence???? * I don't know, maybe the fact that the car was repossessed and is now sitting in your garage?
