All forms of discrimination are harmful and have negative impacts on individuals and society. It is not productive to compare one form of discrimination as being "worse" than another, as each type of discrimination has its own unique challenges and consequences. It is important to address and combat all forms of discrimination in order to create a more equitable and inclusive society.

Concern over finger- and toe-nails, focus on fashion, hip-shaking walk, Kewpie doll speech, and tight-fitting sizes are examples of the stereotypical blonde. In reality, a beautiful blonde is no more concerned about her appearance than any other hair color.

Senior citizens as grouchy and unemployed individuals as lazy are two examples of people who do not fit common stereotypes. As generalized simplifications based -- in its least obnoxious manifestation -- upon some facts observed regarding some people, stereotypes may be both inaccurate and insulting, as in the case of senior citizens who may be portrayed as lovable grandparents or sour neighbors.

These two procedures are done for two very different reasons. In these cultures, women are subordinate, and they are only supposed to have sex to produce children, rather than to feel any pleasure. Removing the clitoris makes it impossible for the woman to experience sexual enjoyment. While both procedures have negative consequences, I am not sure I would equate the two.

Sexism isn't as large a topic of discrimination like racism, but does play a role in the development of the novel. Sexism is expressed towards women from men and women alike. Men feel they must protect women from unsightly things, (Lee 221), and women believe to be a lady they must dress, act, and speak a certain way. Aunt Alexanria makes it her goal to womanize Scout and makes her dress in her nicest dress and attend tea parties. Miss Stephanie tells Scout she'll never be a lady unless she starts wearing dresses. And during Tom's testimony women, and children, are asked to leave the courtroom to 'protect' them from the nature of the case.

Sexism is an important theme in "To Kill a Mockingbird" and should be observed when discussing the discrimination of the novel.

It means equal, not equal but different, not equal but equally respected, not equal but equally important.

Equal. How equal has been shown by our court decisions. In Canada men do not have to wear a shirt in public. We have decided that women do not have to wear shirts in public. Lots of people have lots of reactions to that but it is important that women can go topless in public.

That so many women do not feel safe going topless in public shows that while many Canadians, particularly multi-generational Canadians have strong beliefs, backed by courts, we are failing women. They are not yet equal.

The biggest struggle now is with new Canadians. They were not here during the 50's, 60's and 70's when Canada made spousal abuse not just not acceptable but very offensive to most Canadian men. New Canadians often bring with them attitudes and cultural practices towards women that are not just offensive to Canadians but illegal. Equality in Canada means not accepting such attitudes.

Equal means Equal, the same in all ways possible. The same rights and duties. Equal.
