How do you replace the thermostat located on a 1983 Toyota Tercel?

From what I've gathered googleing and talking to co-workers, (im about to try this afternoon to replace mine). Follow the hoses from the radiator, one will go to the water pump, the other will go to the engine/thermostat. Once the thermostat is located, there is a houses over it that needs to be removed to get at the thermostat. I have also read you should drain all the coolant out before starting, one or two people I've talked to said you can leave the coolant in so preceed at your own risk. (im going to try and drain mine)

Remove the housing cover, remember how the thermostat is orientated in the engine for later installation, replace the thermostat putting the new one in the same way the old one came out. Replace housing and hoses, refill the coolant, run the engine and heater to bleed out any air. Once the engine cools down, check the coolant level again.

Hope that helps.

Why can't I find a repair manual for my 1996 Toyota Tercel?

because it doesn't exist - neither Haynes nor Chilton made one for the 5th gen. tercels - why? I don't know. Maybe the 1987-1994 Haynes or the 1984-1994 Chilton are good enough to use on models 1995-1999 - or maybe they were just to cheap to bother - I wish I knew because I am in the same boat - and I tried google, etc - I also tried Haynes & Chilton directly - nothing. There is always the Toyota factory service manual, if you can find one - it's more expensive but better quality - maybe that you can find on ebay.

What kind of motor oil does a 1989 Toyota tercel take?

How do you replace the crankshaft seal on a Toyota Tercel?

I'll tell you, I am doing one right now and, trust me, you don't want to even start this! The oil pump is connected to the front crank seal housing so you must remove the oil pan to get the front housing off. If you have a four wheel drive wagon like mine, don't even bother because it is a 16 hour job. And there are no guarantees that you will be able even to disconnect motor mounts, disconnect support brackets for trans axle jack up motor without damaging exhaust, and then have the clearance to get to the oil pan bolts to remove the oil pan in order to access/remove front seal housing. It's a big pain and I had no idea what I was getting myself into and I've been a mechanic of 15 years.

How do you bleed the clutch on an '89 Toyota Tercel?

Start at the n/cyl and push the clutch pedal down ONE TIME nd loosten the line going to the slave cyl. Close the line and let your foot off of the pedal and pres it down ONCE more and keep it up until there is no air comming out. Then go to the slave cyl and do the same until no air is present. Make sure the m'cyl doesn't run out of fluid. ALSO PUMPING THE PEDAL CAUSES THE AIR TO MIX IN THE FLUID.

How do you change the oil located on a 1995 Toyota Tercel?

Warm engine. Jack passenger front from behind front wheel just enough to slide oil catch pan underneath .Be sure to slide jackstand underneath also (PLEASE).Oil pan is towards passenger side almost inline with tire it takes a 14mm wrench.Drain oil( Be careful its hot) and locate filter on front of engine just underneath exhaust manifold towards passerger side. You need to purchase or borrow a filter wrench that slides onto top of filter and uses a 3/8 ratchet with 1 in. extension ( A must).Replace filter reinstall oil drain plug.I had to make a gasket out of a piece if oil bottle to slide over drain plug to completely stop any leaks from drain plug.Remove jackstand and lower car, remove oilfiller cap on top of engine and fill with 3qts.of oil if engine is a 5EFE replace cap and start engine for a couple of minutes, shut engine off and check oil level on dipstick an underneath for leaks.I recommend if you are going to do this yourself go to a Toyota dealer and purchase a oil filter wrench , filter and oil.

How can you remove the drivers side inside door panel from a 1996 Toyota Tercel 2 door because something fell inside the panel?

How do you remove 96 Toyota Tercel door panel If you are still trying to find out how to remove inside door panel for '96 Toyota Tercel, I just went through the very same process on a '99 Toyota Tercel. 1. Remove window crank (it has a kind of 'bent wire' c-clamp, which holds it onto the window crank shaft).

2. Pry upwards the top plastic cover to the arm rest (this is a plastic coated foam rubber piece, on which you rest your arm).

3. Remover the two now visible screws which fasten the arm rest onto the door.

4. Remove the one screw fastening the inside door handle.

5. With a blunt tool, gently hit the inside door handle in a forward direction (towards the door hinge). This will release the door handle from the door.

6. Pry between the door panel and the door, to unsnap the snaps holding the door panel in place.

7. Finally, lift door panel out and up to remove it from door.

How do you clean a battery?

For corrosion problems:

  1. Combine baking soda (2-3 Tbsp.) and a little water to make a paste.
  2. Apply to battery connections and watch it work. Heavy deposits need scraping.
  3. Rinse off with clean water but be careful not to let the baking soda get into the battery's electrolyte (acid) through the vent holes. It will neutralize it and battery life will suffer. Most batteries are sealed up pretty good though.
  4. Wire brush the terminals till they are shiny for best results.
  5. Petroleum jelly (vaseline) applied on clean terminals will keep them from reacting with the air and corroding again.
  6. I have had bad luck with the side terminal type. Top terminals are the way to go.

What is holding back horsepower on a 1990 Toyota tercel?

exhaust and intake. that is a rule of thumb for most cars though. the better they can breathe, the better off they are. other then that tercel's were never designed to be performance vehicles anyway. there are many ways to add horsepower though. personaly the 3e is in my opinion a waste of time. i did a 4efte swap into a 91 and was very pleased with the finsihed product. i would do an engine swap with one that has alot more support for things like this. the 3e isn't going to give you much of that.

The placement of the voltage regulator depends on the year of the Tercel. Some are mounted on the fender or firewall, most are an integral part of the alternator and cannot be replaced separately.

Do you have to remove the timing belt when you change the water pump on a 1993 Tercel?

No, you only need to loosen your alternator belt, disconnect/unbolt the alternator and if you need more room which still wont be much, unbolt the passenger side mount after supporting it with a wood block on a jack and lower it a bit very slowly though. Wear gloves or watch your knuckles its a tight area.
