As you do not state which model, I can't guarantee the accuracy of this answer. Most 1984 models are listed as 1.3.4.2 or 1.5.3.6.2.4.

Other posts I've seen suggest it is a weak fuel pump and went on to say it was the one in the tank that was replaced and not the one next to the fuel filter under the drivers side of the car. I will try this on my car tomorrow and see if it fixes the sputter.

The towing capacity should be the same as the sedan i belive. With no brakes on trailer 2000lbs max & 3300lbs with brakes on trailer with standard tranny. But with automatic 3500lbs max with brakes on trailer. But thats all i know. I just would not tow more than 2600lbs behind my car with brakes on trailer. But dont let the place hack your car up putting a tranny cooler on. It will just damage your tranny more. Just take it easy dont floor it while towing & keep it out of overdrive. Dont drive at speeds above 100km.

Castrol 20w50. I have had two Volvo 740s and have been using it for years. In fact, my brother, sister, and father, all of whom drive Volvos, also use Castrol 20w50. While the oil type is important, it is equally (if not more) important to use Volvo (or Mann) filters consistently. I change my oil every 2,500 to 3,000 miles.

Fuel pump fuse is on the main fuse panel behind the front rubbish tray (directly in front of the gear lever in European cars). If you look at the bottom of the flip out door with it closed, you will see a push up lever, push it up and pull towards you at the same time and it will pop out, behind it is the main fuse board and relay board. On the bin as it comes out, there will be a white number coded sticker with the numbers relating to the fuse positions, and it tells you what runs off which fuse.

Incidentally the main fuel pump relay is second back on the left hand side of the relay board - if you search fuel pump relay under google images you will pick up a couple of useful pointers. Good luck.

One for brake lights, one for cruise control. If you hit the brakes when using cruise control, that second switch is what tells the control modules that the brake is being depressed.

There is 2 main things that will do that. #1 The fuel injectors or fuel pump is going bad. #2 The timing belt needs to to be changed, which needs to be done every 35,000 to 45,000 miles after the first time it is changed.

The overdrive relay is located in back of the fuse box which is behind the ashtray.

There is a vacuum controlled pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Check for vacuum leaks. If the unit is faulty, it will often leak fuel into the vacuum line.

It is located on the passenger side firewall next to the fuel pump relay

I had the same problem and it was the driver's rear shock tower had rusted in a section and was allowing water to seep in from the wheel well into the rear when it rained or snowed. I would definitly get that checked, or if you can re weld some metal there to do it yourself. Hope this helps.

It is below the throttle body, mounted in a rubber bracket. Follow the 3/4 inch hose from the air filter box. it goes to IAC valve.

i have a 1989 740 and mine is located on under the hood it the green 1 on the side next to the air filter

The timing can be adjusted by loosing the 2 bolts that hold the distributor on any pre-1989 740s. Be sure your timing belt is installed properly too. Another note here, the harmonic balancer on the 4 cyl Volvo has a rubber mounting between the inner part that attaches to the crankshaft and the outer part that the drive belts go around. They are known to slip. If your timing is way off, put a small white paint mark on the crank pulley and rev the engine a few times while watching it with a timing light. If it is changing positions a lot then you are going to have to replace the balancer before it comes completely apart.

No one said it did not run. Timing belts can be off as many as three teeth and still run. Over 35 years in the Volvo business myself. Do note the question was about a 1990 Model that is a crankshaft position sensor fired car. The timing is not adjustable on a 1989 or later as the above answer states, PRE-1989

My TS 100 had 5, but my TS 250 had 6. I would imagine yours has 5. The TS125 has a weak gearbox and often the 2º axle bearings break, the simphtoms start by a noisy 4º and 6º,later on you lose the 6º , and you discover you have a new dead point or neutral afther or up 5º, that´s probably you´re asking for.
