There are several possible conditions that could be causing the issue:

1. No one is in the car

2. Someone's in the car, but not pushing on brakes

3. Your VW is clearly missing bulbs in your brake light assembly

loosen bottom bolt on the alternator unit and push the alternator towards the engine block until you can remove the belt from the pulley on the alternator. Leave in the bottom bolt until you have removed the top bolt as it may need some levering with a small pry bar to pull the top of the alternator away, when the top is free remove the bottom bolt while holding the alternator so it wont fall, and remove the tension spring. This should only take about 20 to 30 mins!

Begin by loosen the tensioner bolt. Slide the alternator to the left and remove the belt. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the alternator. Remove the alternator retaining bolts.

In most cases the alternator fails due to fluid leaking from the power steering pump which is located above the alternator. I believe that you must remove the power steering pump first but it may be possible to remove from below as well. As you stand in front of the car looking at the engine, look down to the left behind the radiator and you will see the power steering pump. Now squirm around and look down uder that and there it is. Disconnect negative battery terminal.

Loosen the serpentine belt - loosen the tensioner.

Disconnect the alternator connections at the terminals.

Slip the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley and pull the alternator out.

Install is reverse.

IT IS SO EASY BUT PATIENCE IS NEEDED!

1st open rear doors, 2nd plastic cover vertical panel thats under the rubber cable tube REMOVE use flat blade screwdriver under top edge, you may think we're going to brake it! hidden under this panel is 2 screws remove the screws then push lamp unit to the out side of van its held in 2 ball sockets, un-clip wiring connector bulb holder is held in by a couple of no.7??? torx bit screws and after all that its the top bulb.

The black plastic is a little hard to take off. If you gently pull the black trim where it meets the break indicator lenses with the tips of your fingers it pops off.

Open back door, pull away rubber seal from edge, pull black trim off light cover gently away from the light cluster, this will then let you see the 2 screws which hold the light cluster in, undo these and the light cluster pull out to the side of the van. Undo the 2 screws on the back of the cluster and you get to the bulbs.

Auto Zone has instrustions on how to this. We however found it was easier to remove the passanger tire and go that way instead of removing the blets.
