Why do people use pictures in writing?
To more clearly depict the story for those who do not have an adequate imagination. This is more commonly seen in children's books and in some old novels. Authors do not use pictures that much in adult books, however, biographies have pictures to accompany them to help tell the reader about someone's life.
Pictures in novels nowadays are being replaced by movie versions of the stories. This means that more people are simply watching the movie before they read the book, so writers are not bothering to include pictures within their novels as the reader will be referring to the movie's point of view.

Why was writing important to mesopotamia?
In oral cultures, the information and the history of any event were subject to change, depending on who was telling the story; thus, the personality or popularity of the story-teller could affect how the events were understood. When writing came along, it provided one official way to tell a story, with an agreed-upon set of facts; whether in a scripture or a legal document, the event was preserved and available to be studied at any time.
Writing also provided something that could be passed on to the next generation in a form that was stable, making it possible for future generations to know exactly what their ancestors thought. In cultures like Mesopotamia, writing helped to bind the culture together in one shared way of telling the story. People who had mastered literacy could read it for themselves, or for those who could not, it could be read to them by public readers.

Written history is very important to know how we got to where we are now. The traditions of oral history have well served societies but there are so many diverse people on earth and so many centuries of history to pass on that in must be written so that as many people as possible have access to it.
The importance lies in the fact that if you don't know history, you will always be guessing how to deal with situations that are occurring now if you don't know what the outcome may be when it was dealt with in the past. Unfortunately, too many world leaders don't seem to be aware of this. There are well known sayings that tell it more simply; "What is past is prologue" and "Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it" (please don't tell me it's a misquote, I know it is but it's my preferred misquote).
Written History is so important because it lets the reader know what really happened or at least the "Victor" thought what happened. History is written by the victor". for example if the Nazis won WWII then 50 years he would be known as "The Great Leader", 100 years he would be known to as like a God, in 1000 years he would be known as "A god with great leading abilities who defended monsters and demons from his homeland". Obviously that is very different then what really happened and what we know today.
Oral history can have many misconceptions the story would get greater and greater like i mentioned before and so it is unclear of what really happened
