While it's running with the hood up, hold the end of a long screwdriver against the center of the pulley on the alternator. If the alternator is bad, the screwdriver will bounce around ever so slightly. You may need more than one person for this. If it has a serpentine belt (one belt for all accessories), locate on the underside of the hood/somewhere in the engine bay the belt routing diagram.Study it carefully. Know where the belt goes, and which way it goes. Now: put that socket and wrench back onto the tensioner. Have a helper hold the tensioner as far as they can get it to give you as much slack as you can get for that belt. Route the belt around the crankshaft first, then onto the other accessories above it. The alternator is the last accessory you put the belt on to. It normally can be easily slipped on, but if you can't get enough slack, you'll just have to wiggle it around. A lot. 7. Re-connect any wires that were connected to the alternator. Most likely it IS an alternator problem. Sometimes a diode can go bad and the indicator light will come on. Other times the alternator will be intermittently bad or even go over-voltage.
In this case, you should take the vehicle to an auto parts retail store such as Auto Zone or Checker Auto or whatever is in your area. Many of those places offer free alternator diagnostic checkup and they're actually quite accurate. It could be a diode in the diode plate and the alternator is only producing about 1/3 of what it should, in which case you'll have problems under a high current load.
I have a 98 Nissan SX that should be real similar. You have to first take the other belt off by loosening the top reae pulley and letting it slide down to release tension on that belt. The tensioning belt is on the firewall side. Once that belt is out of the way you can start on the alternator belt. Loosen the center bolt on the tensioner pulley, located high between the alternator and the crank. Then you should find the tightening bolt in front, below the alternator. I believe it's a long 5/16 bolt sitting at about a 45 degree angle. Back that off to let the pulley go up and release the tension on the belt. Then it should slip off and the new one should slip back in place. Then just retighten everything. Hint - to get to the pulley center bolt you will probably need to pull the passenger wheel and plastic splash guard.

Hi, FIRST take the ground off the battery!! Then loosen the belt and slip off look at the wires on the back-if you can remove them do so, if not remove the adjuster bolt and pivot bolt and position in a better place-the heavy wire is the output wire-if it's loose your alternator may be good. Unplug the regulator connector and bring to a parts store to check. Good luck
*Remove the negative battery connection!
*Raise the right side of the car and place it on a stand and remove the front tire.
*Remove the air cleaner (and several hoses, one electrical connection).
*Remove 3 vacumn components (box looking thing and two round what-ya-ma-call-ems) and several more vacumn lines from the right side of the engine compartment.
*There is one hose connecting from the engine block to the intake manifold that is has coolant flow in it. It was in my way and and I disconnected the manifold end of that hose. Lost a little coolant on the ground. Nothing major.
*Remove the upper bracket that are holding and tensioning the anternator.
*Remove the belt.
*Remove the anternator lower bolt. I also removed the lower bracket, I'm not sure I really needed to though.
*Turn the back end of the alternature up and disconnect the wires.
*Lift the pulley end out through the space made by disconnecting the vacumn stuff.
*When it seems to be stuck, roll the alternater about 90 degrees and keep lifting. *Tight, but IT FITS through.
*Place the new one back down the same way. Connect the wires then bolt into place.

I just did this on my '99 Honda Accord EX so assuming it's the same as a 2000... put a wrench on the 14mm hex head bolt on the tensioner pulley and turn counter clock wise, this rotates the tensioner releasing tension on the belt . I found it easiest to have someone under the car pulling the belt off the bottom pulley (crank) while someone releases the tension.
