How to replace alternator on 1998 Mercury Tracer?
I just replaced the alternator on my 99 mercury tracer. The guy at the auto parts store quickly showed us how to do it ourselves (saving us the price of a mechanic) Ask them at the store to show you which, but after disconnecting the battery, there is a plate on top of the alternator that you can take off and get out of the way. There are 2 bolts on the side to remove, and you loosen the tensioner that holds the belt tight by pushing it forward. After all that, carefully life the alternator out. It's a tight fit, but fortunately, these are accessible from the top rather than needing to get under the car. It takes some muscle to get the bolts loosened, but it's do-able. Then, obviously, reverse the process as you put the new alternator in. They told us the biggest thing to watch for is your radiator hose right in the front. It's easy to accidentally lean on it as you're working and break it.
I'm a female and was able to do most of the work myself, calling my husband in for some extra strength. Neither of us are very experienced with working on cars, so I'd say this is a fairly easy task.
Good luck!
Where is adjuster for alternator belt on Ford Expedition?
There is no adjustment . It is a serpentine belt (one continuous belt) that rotates all pulleys for each belt driven component. the tension is adjusted automatically by the tensiometer located at the front of the engine on the passenger side right across from crankshaft pulley. However there are worn belt indicator marks on the side of the tensiometer pulley that tell you if the belt needs replacement. to release tension , use a long ratchet or wrench and turn wrench ,believe counter clock wise, only moderate torque is needed. If not ,turn clockwise. do this when replacing belt or component, such as alternator.

IF you remove the right front tire and guard this will give you easy access to your alternator. You will need to jack your car up. It sits underneath the engine to the right of the starter. If you locate the oil filter you'll see it right in front of you. Just disconnect your battery and then the plasitc guard on the alternator held on by a single bolt. Then disconnect all wires. Next, Unscrew the two bolts that runn across the bottom. Put a 14mm on the tensioner to put some slack in the serpentine belt and pull the 14mm wrench. Take the belt from around the alternator and then remove the bolt on the top right of the alternator. that one in particular is a little hard to get to, but take your time and good luck. If you are still having trouble then get the Haynes Repair manual for the Saturn S-series 1991-2002. You can find them at any auto perts store and they are great to have!
