Antifreeze and Engine Coolant

All internal combustion engines generate heat. To regulate the temperature of the engine, an engine cooling system, usually a water-cooled system, removes the heat. Antifreeze liquid solutions are added to prevent ice build-up in these systems at cooler temperatures.

How do you change coolant suzuki swift?

take of the engine fluid cap and there will be a green or blue rubber pipe with a little rubber csp on. if you just pul off the cap you can put the coolant down there bit by bit but only do it when the car is cool

How do you dispose of used engine coolant?

DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluids are glycol based, making them very similar to antifreeze. It is best disposed of in the same manner as used antifreeze and sent for recycling.

Why would antifreeze leak from the cap?

Probably because the cap is worn out. They're cheap, so you might as well replace it. Look at where the seal touches the radiator while you're at it and make sure there's no crud interfering with making a good seal. In a modern car the fluid level goes all the way to the top of the radiator, and the overflo gets caught in the bottle, so if the seal isn't good it will leak more or less all the time, at least until you've lost so much coolant that the radiator is no longer full. The gasket is probably damaged or worn. Replace the cap and it should be ok. Caps are supposed to be able to typically hold 12 to 15 PSI, depending on the manufacturer. If you're building more pressure than that, you probably have a problem with the cooling system and will need to investigate further.

What kind of antifreeze goes in 99 grand Cherokee?

sorry, im blonde

Well, I'm NOT a blonde.

With the engine running, open the hood and you should see an opaque white overflow tank with green (hopefully) antifreeze in it. On the side of the tank are level marks - one for an engine COLD level and the other for the engine WARM or HOT level. Since the engine will be WARM / HOT while you are adding the antifreeze you'll be using this mark as your reference. Open the plastic flap on the top of the overflow tank and slowly add antifreeze until it reaches the lower edge of the WARM/HOT mark on the tank. Close the flap on the tank to preserve system pressure and prevent antifreeze from spraying all over the engine compartment.

*** Under no circumstances are you to add coolant directly through the radiator. The system is under pressure and must remain closed. The overflow tank is the only way to safely add antifreeze/coolant to the system.

Why would coolant be leaking from the exhaust pipe?

That's exactly what it is, water. The products of combustion are water and carbon dioxide. While the exhaust stays hot the water comes out as high temperature steam, usually you don't even notice it. When the exhaust pipe and/or outside temperature is cold enough the exhaust will cool and some of the water vapor will condense into steam and possibly even water that drips from a weep hole in the muffler. If you're seeing a little water drip from the muffler, everything is working as designed.

How do you fix a leaking car rad?

replace the line with the appropate size line. It should be faily easy, just hose clamps at each end. Your local auto parts store should have the hose, and it is not very expensive. Be not to get just plain fuel line as it will not work with transmission fluid. The parts store should have transmission line or fuel injection line that is suitable.

How do you know when you need to add antifreeze?

If the coolant is more than 5 years old, it would be recommended to drain, flush and refill the coolant system with a fresh antifreeze mixture of 50% antifreeze and 50% water. This should protect the system down to -34 degrees F. A close inspection of hoses, radiator and possible replacement of the thermostat would also be recommended.

You accidentally put window washer fluid in the coolant container - what's the damage?

Probably no damage, especially if you only filled the reservoir with it and not the whole cooling system. Use a turkey baster and suck up what's in the reservoir, dispose of properly. Then refill with coolant. I'm really not sure if the washer fluid will screw with the various rust inhibitors or lubricants key to the coolant. If you're really concerned, just flush the coolant and refill the system.

Why does all the antifreeze spill out when you turn on the AC?

Because the Heater Core is Bad. Are you sure its antifreeze that's leaking? It could just be condensation dripping off the a/c - least that's what my mechanic told me.

Why does coolant boil out of radiator?

radiator blues

When the water runs out of the radiator, it either means that the radiator is cracked, which means that its building steam inside your radiator. building the steam inside your radiator raises the temperature of your engine causing it to overheat and steam up on you.

Depending upon where the water is coming from, the solution could be as simple as tightening or replacing the radiator cap, or tightening or replacing the drain plug,or tightening hose clamps. Check those things before proceeding.

What could cause coolant to overflow even though engine temperature is normal on a cool day and no coolant was added?

The engine needs to be flushed.the coolant ports have a build up of gunk causing the engine to run hotter. The heated water expands to much causing it to over flow from the reserve tank.

Can you put antifreeze in the car if there is water in there?

Yes, simply drain some of the water from the system. Usual way is from the drain valve at bottom of most rads.

Could coolant be leaking from the water pump weep hole on 2001 jeep wrangler but the pump still working properly?

usually coolant leaks come from bad gaskets... or a bad water pump.. i would say drain the system and run water through the radiator (do NOT drive with water in the radiator, your engine will surely overheat!) and see if you can spot where the coolant is coming from... if it is coming from the engine block then you might have bad gaskets.. if not then it's the water pump.

Why does your antifreeze run out so quick?

It might be a freeze plug open on the motor (a safety feature). Once the level gets low enough, it will stop leaking.

ANS 2 - More likely is that it's leaking while the engine is running and hot. Check at the base of waterpump. Also any hoses to heater, etc. If you don't see any leaks and it still leaks it may be the head gasket. ( Let's hope not.)

Why do you smell antifreeze when you turn on the air conditioner?

If the heater has a sweet smell it could be that the heater core is leaking engine coolant. When the leak gets worse you will have a wet floor on the passenger side and the windshield will fog up when you turn on the defroster.

Why is antifreeze added to water in car radiator to protect it What fact about the use of antifreeze illustrates a rule that governs the physical world?

This has got two properties in general.

For cooling only, then you need only water.

The problem with only water is when the car stand still with engine off in a cold environment. Water will eventually freeze, thus expand. This expansion will rupture the radiator and engine will quickly overheat because water runs out.

Only water might also corrode the inside surface of the radiator.

Most antifreeze liquids today offer frost-protection and corrosion-protection.

The antifreeze liquid just lowers the waters temperature-point of freezing.

Even when freezing (to a slurry) it does not form solid ice that can rupture the radiator.

Why water used as a coolant?

because heat produced goes to the water and changes to steam and is used run the turbines

How do you replace the thermostat on the olds mobile silhouette your low coolant warning light turns even though its still full?

Your thermostat has nothing to do with your coolant light. Your thermostat, if bad, would make your van run extremely hot, or not heat up at all. Your coolant light is probably a bad sending unit or ground.

Why did i replace the top radiator hose filled with antifreeze and the engine still smokes?

Because there is antifreeze int he system and it takes a while to burn through.

Also replace the bottom hose too. <> If it smokes from under the hood, It has antifreeze on the engine exterior, You can wash it off. Or just drive it and it will burn off. If it smokes from the exhaust, There is engine damage.

Car starts really rough and then it starts to run smoothly the gauge shows that it is overheating?

If it starts very rough but then clears out expect either fouling of spark plugs or a mixture problem that clears up when O2 feedback becomes available.

As far as the gage showing overheating... does it show this immediately after a cold start? Have you considered actually taking its temperature with a suitable tool?

Would using water instead of coolant cause jeep cherokee's engine to over heat?

No, it would not. Because the system is pressurized, the water would not evaporate as readily, and, even if it did, there is nowhere for it to escape to.

However, using water instead of coolant is not recommended because in coolants there are many additives for things like anti-rust, anti-corrosion, and lubricants for the water pump and seals. Using the antifreeze raises the temperature at which the mixture would boil, reducing the chance of a boil over especially in warm climates.
