How did the invention of the crayon effect society?

The invention of the true wax crayon brought art to children through a new safe medium (the wax crayons introduced from the mid 1880s on were non-toxic) and therefore accessible in schools. Over time all children got exposed early to art and the creativity of expression. Well known painters and artisans have indicated one of their first exposures to their creativity was through a crayon. The crayon is one of the most recognized devices around the world and and anchor point to childhood for the majority of civilization. The impact to society was in the ability to encourage and foster creativity and art expression and that has had a ripple effect across everything from what you see in the world to how you see it (that creative element in every design, ad or idea).

What is a soft fire brick?

A fire brick, or refractory brick, is a block of ceramic material that can withstand high temperatures and is used to line furnaces, kilns, fireboxes, and fireplaces. For example, they use it to surround pipes, conduits, etc. in walls as fire breaks. Hard fire bricks are used on the inside of things like kilns because they absorb and conduct heat easily, which allows for the high temperatures needed in cooking and firing. Soft, or insulating, fire bricks are used on the outside of kilns because their very low thermal conductivity allows them to insulate and keep the heat inside the kiln. Singular insulating fire bricks can also be used as a base for small scale soldering and precious metal clay firing with hand-held soldering irons and blowtorches. In this case, the soft fire brick protects the hard surface beneath it from damage.

Where can you find information about art and craft fairs in Bloomington Indiana?

Someone in Indiana publishes a booklet each year of arts and crafts shows throughout the state. I forget the name, but I have obtained copies at Visitor's Shops. Since there are a lot of Arts and Crafts shops (or there used to be, so I guess there still are), in Nashville, you might be able to obtain one there, too. You might try the Bloomington library, too. Sometimes, local high schools and Home Economics Clubs have bazaars. You could get information about the home economics clubs from the County Extention Office, and could call the schools. Online, you could type "Bloomington, Indiana" in the search bar. Often, towns will list the shows they have on their site. Deb

Who invented the crayon?

Well once upon a time the purple wombat and my pet coral snake were under my porch and the purple wombat had an idea. "What if there was a magical wand that could make colors appear on a piece of paper?" announced the wombat.

"What a great idea!" exclaimed the snake, "We should make something that does that!" So the two animals got to work. They try taking a green moist stick from the hickory tree above them and try making a picture of a squirrel. This only rips a hole in the paper. They don't get discouraged. they take the candle from the fire place and make a line on the paper.

"It works!" yells the wombat, "It really works!" The friends set the paper with the crayon on the porch and wait for a human to find it.

Did anyone see the ION Life Shes Crafty show that taught framing a sectionally cut poster into clear plastic sleeves I am trying to find the instructions help please?

Materials:

  • Photo enlarged to 36" X 24" (91.4 cm X 69 cm) on poster paper
  • 3" X 4" (7.62 cm X 10.16 cm) - 84 'toploader" hockey card sleeves (hard plastic)
  • 148 - 3/8" (1 cm) jump rings
  • 14 split key rings - ¾" (19 mm) diameter
  • 50" long (127 cm) X 3/4" (2 cm) diameter curtain rod - (the length will be determined by the length of your photo + 6" (15 cm))
  • Curtain rod hooks
  • Utility knife, 1/8"(.32 cm) heavy-duty hole punch (Crop-A-Dile), metal edged ruler, pencil

Directions:

  1. Enlarge your photo to the desired size. Make sure the total dimensions will fit evenly inside the hockey sleeves when the picture is cut up. Take advantage of the blank border that may surround your poster and incorporate it into the project.
  2. Draw your cutting lines on the back side of the poster to 3 ¾" (9.6 cm) X 2 ½" (6.4 cm). Using a metal ruler to ensure a straight edge, run the utility knife along your cutting lines to cut the poster into sections. If your poster is 36" X 24" (91.4 cm X 69 cm), you will have 84 pieces, 14 across and 6 down. Make sure to number each section horizontally from 1 to 14. Then vertically add the row number from 1 - 6 or it will turn into a jig-saw puzzle. An extra reminder, because the outer and bottom edges of the poster do not need to be linked, mark an "X" along those points as a reminder NOT hole punch them.
  3. Place each piece inside a hockey card sleeve.
  4. Once all the pieces are in the sleeves, hole-punch the centre of each outer edge of the hockey card sleeves, as close to the edge as possible. Remember, do not hole-punch the outer edges of the poster or the lower edge of bottom row sleeves as they do not need to be linked.
  5. Lay the pieces face down on a table or the floor in proper order. Start attaching each piece together with jump rings.
  6. Along the top row of the adjoined pieces, make sure to add the 14 key rings for hanging.
  7. Hang from ¾" (2 cm) diameter metal piping or curtain rod; attach like a shower curtain.

Can you sell food at art and craft shows?

Selling food at an arts and craft show is very risky, unless you are a professional with the proper licenses. Some show rules do not permit food at all, and the ones that do have very strict rules to make sure you comply with the laws of your area. This includes pre-packaged foods, as well as food prepared on site. There may be some lee-way with the very small fund raisers, such as a teen club bake sale, but even that is getting harder to organize, since people are more aware of the risks.
