How do you adjust the headrest on a 2002 745i BMW?

The 02 standard seats have the headrest movement linked to the forward/reverse movement of the seat. I was not going to buy the car because of this ill-conceived "feature". It assumes if the seat is moved back the passenger is a tall person and adjusts the headrest up accordingly. Move it forward and it lowers for a smaller person. There IS an undocumented defeat switch of some sort under the seat that only one person in the service dept at my dealer knew was there and how to operate it. What ever he did (it took 3 minutes) the headrest no longer moves with the seat. You can manually move it up and down however. If your service person can't figure it out tell him to contact BMWNA.

BMW 530i transmission problems?

BMW 3 and 5 series equiped with the ZF 5HP19 are known for the "noreverse" problem. This occurs with the D Clutch Drum fails - cracks or breaks. If this is your problem I suggest checking out www.noreverse.org where you will find considerable information on the subject. NOTE - BMW dealer wanted over $5 to replace the transmission with a BMW rebuilt but I was able to locate a reputable transmission repair shop who rebuilt the transmission and replace the D Clutch Drum with the upgraded part for $3K.

How do I replace the idle control valve on a 1988 BMW 325i?

To change the idle control valve disconnect the wire harness from the valve. Take off the 10mm nut that holds the mount to the intake manifold and pull the mount clear of the stud. Pull off the tube that goes to the intake manifold and then pull the idle control valve from the intake boot. It's a good idea to completely remove the boot and examine it for leaks. The rubber on these boots gets dry and cracks over time and allows extra air in the system behind the MAF wich confuses your car's brain.

What would cause tail light failure on a BMW Comp but all the lights seem to be working well?

This can be tricky. first make absolutley sure ALL lights are working correctly, back up lights, license plate lights, turn signals, third brake light and all exterior lights are working. and also make sure they are all the same light brightness. if all are good then i would suggest seeing what light it says is out in your instrument cluster,i assume its a rear light. go in the trunk and remove the tail light assemblies from the trunk, (these are the main brake light circuit board assemblies that hold the bulbs) then disconnect the connector to them and inspect the pins, make sure there are no burn marks and they are all good, both in the connector and the circuit board assembly. if still no luck, check the rubber boot that the trunk lid hinges are by that route the wires through, you can pull the boot out and inspect the wires inside making sure none are damaged from the hinge of the trunk being moved. hope this helps.
