The commencement of World War Two has different dates in different countries. To the Americans, World War Two started on December 7th, 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour. To Britain, France, Canada, Poland, World War Two started on Sept 3rd 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland (September 1st 1939). What is a fact about general Montgomery leading the allies to a victory over the axis troops in north Africa?

Montgomery commanded the British 8th Army, operating from Egypt and Libya as the Germans in North Africa were squeezed into Tunisia and eventually forced to surrender. There were British commonwealth troops under his command, but no Americans. At the other end of North Africa the Operation Torch landings of November 8, 1942 put ashore a force of American and British troops. This force was under the command of Dwight Eisenhower, an American general (and later the 34th president). Eisenhower was also Supreme Allied Commander Mediterranean, which meant that in theory at least, it was Eisenhower, and not Montgomery, who led the Allied forces to victory over the Axis troops in North Africa. Montgomery had not been the first choice to go in as a replacement in commanding the 8th Army, but the chosen officer died in a plane crash on the way to assume the command, so Montgomery was sent in. Montgomery did win a victory at El Alamein, which was in fact the first British victory of the war. Montgomery refused to launch this attack until he was absolutely certain that he outnumbered his opponent in every category, from crackers to cannon, as well as men, tanks and trucks, by a three to one margin. He was greatly assisted in this by the inertia of his vastly overrated opponent, the German General Rommel, who first crawled six hundred miles out on a limb from this base of supplies, placing himself in a position where he was dependent on a single fragile six hundred mile long supply line running along the North Africa coast, and thus subject to interruption anywhere along that entire length, at a time when he had command of neither the sea or the air. Rommel then squatted in place and obligingly waited while Montgomery meticulously accumulated his edge in equipment and supplies, which made the British victory possible.

Why did the Allies attack El Alamein?

To take it back from Axis control.

I imagine a main reason they would want it in the first place is because it is on the coast and whoever has control of El Alamein would have a foothold on Egypt and Northern Africa.

What types of drinks were drunk during world war 2 in Great Britain?

Alcohol availability during World War 2 depended on locations. If you were in the Pacific Theater you might come across some Japanese Sake on one of the seized islands. On the Naval ships you might find hard liquor stashes or beer. In Europe there was wine, beer and hard liquor in many places. Sometime the troops could enjoy some of it. One soldier confessed that when they freed France he was given cases of Champagne. He and his buddies had Champagne for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They even bathed in it. In England the Americans enjoyed the dark ales the Brits sold in the pubs. My dad really loved that ale. I learned about those ales in an English Pub that was in San Diego. The Russians had Vodka. I think they drink more vodka there than they drink milk or water ... just kidding.

Britain and France and the other Germany

AnswerGermany was angry at the british for stopping their help of rebuilding
  • Alright so To fully understand the causes of ww2 , one needs to recognize how ww1 ended. The Treaty of Versilles was intended for peace amongst the fighting powers. World War 1 started between two countries. The Arch duke Franz Ferdidnan being assassinated. Each of those countries had allies. Anyway , this treaty made it look like it was All Germanys fault and that they had to pay for all WAr Costs. In october of 1929 the Great Depression hit America. The Stock market crashed on the 29th causing chaos among the citizens. Since alot of money was spent helping the French and instead of paying it off over time , America was in desperate needs for the money ASAP. Unfortunaltly France didnt have the money , as there economy was fluctuating. And since Germany owed France money, the French invaded and basically took over. So , you have the USA wanting the money the French owed and France not having the money taking it from the Germans. After a while , the hard workers of Germany were tired of working the long drastic hours and not receiving much money. The eonomy was poor. These men created the NSDAP. Hitler was the leader. People of Germany for the most part kinda liked Hitler. When the election for a new chairman or president of the country cam around , Hitler wasnt the leading man. However , in order for the leading man to win , Hitler had to be made an officer , since people liked him. OKay , so now you have this political leader who isn't really liked by the people and in order to win he elects Hitler for a job that sounds important but really isn't. Within the next year , the leader of the coutry resigned leaving Hitler incharge. The Next thing you know he has the whole country chanting his name , Germany basically became a cult. In September Hitler decides to INVADE Poland. Germanys economy will benifet from war.

What were the British strengths and Germans weaknesses in the battle of Britain?

Germany's air force was far larger and better than Britain's. Before the battle of Britain Hitler bombed the airfields trying to destroy the RAF. He then turned his attention to all the major cities and industrial areas and so gave the RAF a chance to reagin power. we had very few pilots and so many polish, Czech and french pilots flew for us. we had the hurricane and the spitfire, wheras the Germans had the mesherschmitt 109. But Herman Goering (leader of Germany's air force) wanted the fighters to stay close to the bombers and so they lost the advantage of speed and surprise. The british managed to repel the attack and so a turning point in the war came about.
