Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

What does it mean when you car stalls in water and doesn't start?

Don't drive in deep water.

It means you got the electronics wet. Once they dry out it will start.

Does it harm newer cars to remove battery cable when car is running?

Not really it depends on what type of car it is

Yes it can. Unhooking the cable with the engine running can cause a voltage spike from the charging system, which can do serious damage to the electronics on the vehicle.

Why hot diesel car engine does not start if it is restarted?

If you try immediately after it has turned off it may be vapor locked. The diesel will become gaseus and will be in the form of vapor which will not ignite correctly. It should, of course start immediately. Just let it set for several minutes then try again.

When car won't start how do I override automatic gear?

It depends if your car/truck has four-wheel drive or not (all four wheels turn, when shifted). First, if you have a manual transfer case, then you should be able to pop it in to neutral, and push it where it needs to go. If you have a Chevy pickup, then put in you're key till everything, but the engine works, and press the button on the left side of the steering wheel.

If you have a stick-shift, then open the clutch, and just take it out of gear. If it doesn't move, then check the p-brake. Note that this will only work if you have a pickup truck, or an old model car (2006 or older) This will not work for awd cars like subarus. It's either that, or you could just detach the axle from the transmission/transfer case, tie it up, and start pushing. More work than needed, but it works.

Would a car door key without a chip damage the ignition system?

Yes! If you take an uncoded key (like an emergency door key) and try to start the car, the ignition system will disable itself. This is why locksmiths generally will not cut a spare key for you, and if they are willing to cut one, some will make you sign a waiver that says you will not place the key in the ignition to avoid getting sued later.

A dealer can unlock the system for you.

There is also a procedure for coding a new key to your ignition system. Again, see the dealer.

How do you troubleshoot a Ford F-250 6.0 diesel engine starting problem when the batteries read a sitting 12.58 volt but the engine will not turn over?

Quite probably the Starter is defective OR the positive lead from the Battery is corroded internally. Check the Terminal Connections as corrosion WILL INTERRUPT STARTER. Could be the Starter Solenoid which on many Models is replaceable.

Check also the Engine Ground (different from the Battery Ground) as a incomplete circuit (Open) will not function. Some Engines have 2+ Ground points.

Check Starting Circuit/System Fuses and/or Relays.

You could just have a dead Battery regardless of the charge shown as there could be a Dead Cell and when Engine cranked, Battery defects.

Ask away if none of these ideas provide a positive result.

CHEERS!!

What does it mean when car cabin smells like gas when air conditioner is turned on and how much to fix it?

This means that you have a gas leak somewhere in the engine compartment. The smell comes from the AC air inlet pumping in fresh air from the engine compartment, which is where the leak is. Check your injector o-rings for deterioration. Also check your fuel pressure regulator and lines.

Will a bad fuse stop your 93 Lincoln town car from starting?

I disconnected the battery then reconnected it and my lights keep flashing and car won't start?

the vehicle's anti-theft system has been engaged. read the manual for the correct recovery procedure, it may be to put the electronic security key in the ignition lock, but the manual will say.

Why did your car make a loud noise than shut down?

Well it could be a number of things. If the car will not start or even turn over it may have seized the engine or spun a connecting rod bearing which is a major problem. If it does start up again and the loud noise continues, sounding like a knock u should not try to drive it to the shop. Shut it off and call a towing company. If it starts back up and doesn't make any noise it may be fine. Just keep an ear out for pinging and knocking sounds.

What do you do when your small block Chevy is out of time and won't start?

Start from scratch:

Pull the number 1 plug and bump the engine over to get #1 piston to 4-6 degrees BTDC. Then take off the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointing toward the tower with the wire that goes to the #1 plug. That's where it should be.

If not, loosen the distributor clamp and slide it back. Lift the distributor out until you can turn the rotor to the spot you want then slide it back in. Usually have to wiggle it back and forth a little to mesh in the right spot. The drive gear is helical, so you'll have to mess with it a little

When you get the rotor oriented towards the #1 tower on the cap, the distributor won't go all the way back down. Bump the engine over a couple times (while pushing down a little) to align the distributor shaft with the oil pump shaft and it'll drop the rest of the way down. Put the clamp back on, but don't tighten it up. Just snug, so you can still turn the distributor by hand.

Verify that the wires are on the plugs in the correct order. Going clockwise, after the #1 wire the next one on the cap should be #8 then 4 then 3 then 6 then 5 then 7 then 2.

With everything reconnected, the engine should start if that was your problem. May have to turn the distributor a little while trying to start it. It'll be close, but not perfect. Once you get the engine running, put a timing light on and set it for about 10 or 12 degrees BTDC.

Your results may vary :)

If you want to make sure it is seized. Remove the spark plugs.
