If it's red stop as soon as possible, and get someone to assess the problem. Read the code etc.

If it's yellow the problem will likely just degrade the car's performance, and it won't pass inspection if that's a concern. Get the problem assessed as soon as you can, becase it will get worse.

It means you need to have a code reader connected and pull codes to determine the issue.

Never heard of a TLC light on a car.

The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery and wait a few minutes then reconnect the cable. But, if the problem that caused the light to come on hasn't been fixed the light will come back on.

Most codes will self clear after the cause is repaired. It may take quite a while for the computer to run the proper self test enough time to have that happen.

A fault has been detected in the system. It may be an intermittent thing, one time thing or something that needs attention, but if the vehicle is still running fine then have it looked at, at your soonest convenience. You can unhook the pos and neg battery terminals for 5-10 minutes thus resetting the system. If the light comes back on after the vehicle relearns it's settings etc (can take a day or a few weeks depending on the hot/cold startups driving speeds etc) , then it needs attention. If it doesn't come back on, then it may have been an intermittent thing or one time occurrence which effectively will have been cured by you resetting the system.

One expensive lesson I was taught after taking it in to be looked at is the obvious with many cars now days. If the gas cap is not completely closed (or it is not sealing completely when you screw it back it) will cause the Check/Service Engine light to come on.

**this is just a cautionary note. i have learned that a blinking service engine soon light means that the problem is worse than if the light were just steady and one should not drive the truck.

Need more information (such as engine size) to tell you why. Experience is anyone of them can misfire but Fords of that vintage sometimes have problems with cooling leaks on that hole from heater hose I had exact same problem on my '99. Leak on #4 plug caused damage to the coil. Changed hose and coil. Coil very easy to replace. My brothers 98 F150 had the same problem, had to change the intake gaskets. All four corners of the intake was leaking. Took about 4 hours to repair. His was a 4.6 motor.
