Should your engine be on while washing it or not?

Shut off and warm. Cleaning the engine compartment is not that difficult and unless you are a perfectionist or plan to enter the vehicle in Concours d'Elegance competition, it does not require much elbow grease. First, warm up the engine for a few minutes. This will help soften the grease and crud. However, do not let the engine get hot. Never spray water on a hot engine since sudden temperature changes can cause serious damage. Also you can get serious burns from hot engine parts. Next, cover critical parts of engine with plastic bags and rubber band to protect them from water and other liquids. Either cover the air intake and filter or remove it and cover the opening. Protect electrical components like distributor, coil. alternator, and fuse box. Use rubber bands to seal the bags around the components. Check the oil filler cap, the power steering filler cap, oil dip stick, etc. to make sure they are tight. After everything is sealed up, spray the engine, accessories and surrounding components with a high quality non-petroleum-based degreaser that will not harm the paint. After letting the degreaser work for about five minutes, use a soft brush, a paint brush works well, to loosen up the crud. Respray with degreaser and rebrush if grease and grunge remains. When the entire engine and engine compartment looks pretty clean, rinse with lots of water from your garden hose. If you can, hook up to a hot water tap since hot water will do an even better job. Better yet, do the job at a do-it-yourself car wash which usually has higher pressure hot water and is set up to handle the dirty water in a more environmentally friendly way. Even though the degreaser may not contaminate the ground, the nasty stuff washed off can get into the groundwater supply and do harm. Many car washes have equipment specifically for cleaning engines. If you want to use a degreaser that you know is safe, I only use the facility to rinse with plain, hot water. Clean the engine first and wash the vehicle after cleaning the engine compartment making sure all overspray of the degreaser is removed. Since all degreasers will remove wax, plan on rewaxing after cleaning the engine compartment. Once the engine and compartment is clean, immediately remove all plastic bags and rubber bands. Dry standing water and aluminum parts with a soft cotton towel. Start the engine and let it to warm up to dry the rest of the engine as well as evaporate any moisture that may have collected in electric parts. If you do not start the engine immediately, often moisture will seep inside parts and it now will take a long time for things to dry out. If this occurs, use an ordinary hair dry to heat ignition systemparts like distributor and coil. Once everything is dry and has completely cooled, you may want to coat hoses, weatherstripping, shields, gaskets and other rubber parts with a rubber protectant. However, do not use it on rubber belts since it could cause them to slip.

Why does the check engine light come on in 2007 dodge truck?

The check engine light comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to AutoZone or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.

Service Information

2003 Chevrolet Chevy K Silverado - 4WD | Sierra, Silverado (VIN C/K) Service Manual | Engine | Engine Controls - 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L | Diagnostic Information and Procedures | Document ID: 1101624

Inspection/Maintenance Evaporative Emission System Set

Description

The purpose of this procedure is to satisfy the enable criteria necessary to execute inspection/maintenance (I/M) readiness diagnostics for the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System. The procedure may be used to set the EVAP I/M System Status display on the scan tool to YES. The EVAP I/M System Status display indicates whether or not the control module has completed the readiness diagnostics. The readiness diagnostics complete when all DTCs comprising the diagnostics run and pass, or any DTC comprising the diagnostics illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). If the diagnostics pass during one drive cycle, seventeen hours must elapse, regardless of whether the vehicle is driven or not. Then, the diagnostics will run again during the next drive cycle in which the conditions for running are met. Once the diagnostics have passed during the third drive cycle, the EVAP I/M System Status display will be updated to YES. A failed or aborted diagnostic will require the vehicle to cool down in order to meet the enable criteria for another drive cycle. Therefore, performing a visual inspection prior to running the EVAP test may prevent having to repeat the drive cycle.

Conditions for Running• At least 17 hours have elapsed since the last drive cycle met the Conditions for Running.

• The difference between the startup engine coolant temperature (ECT) and the startup intake air temperature (IAT) is less than 8°C (14.4°F).

• The barometric pressure (BARO) is more than 74 kPa.

• The startup ECT is between 4-30°C (39-86°F).

• The startup IAT is between 4-30°C (39-86°F).

• The fuel level is between 15-85 percent.

• The battery voltage is between 10-18 volts.

• The fuel level does not increase more than 9 percent during this drive cycle.

• The engine run time is at least 10 minutes.

• The vehicle has been driven at least 5 km (3.15 miles) this drive cycle.

• The estimated ambient temperature at the end of this drive cycle is between 2-32°C (36-89°F).

• The shutdown ECT is at least 70°C (158°F).

• The ignition is turned OFF for at least 1 hour after this drive cycle.

Diagnostic Aids

Extreme high or low ambient temperatures may prevent the EVAP System Tests from initiating. A loose fuel cap may cause a test to abort or fail and prevent the I/M System Status from updating. A failed or aborted diagnostic will require the vehicle to cool down in order to meet the enable criteria for another drive cycle.

If there is an impending failure, the system may require more time to run the diagnostic than was allotted in the set procedure. If the diagnostic does not run after numerous attempts and no DTC is set, review the appropriate scan tool data list and the service information. This will give an indication of why the test does not complete. Some diagnostics may abort due to changes in the conditions while the test is running. For example, changes in engine load, such as a cooling fan or an A/C compressor clutch turning ON, may cause the diagnostic to abort.

Check engine light flashes on 1996 Chevy Silverado?

When you get a po300 code and the check engine light flashes it to let you know to turn off the enging because you are starting to damage the catalatic converter, I screwed up mine by driving it it was a bad cam sensor

2002 Saturn check engine light stays on no matter what i did they can not get it to go out and it will not pass inspection with it on can you help find the problem don't have 200.00 to get it fixed pl?

Your first step will be to get the diagnostic trouble code read. That should tell you why the light is on. Some auto places will read the code for free. You can also get a code reader yourself. Your vehicle should be OBDII compliant, so you'll need to get a code reader that can do OBDII. Until you know what the code is, you can only take a guess as to the problem.

Keep in mind that it may take a high number of on/off cycles before the code will clear itself. If you have a code reader, it may have the capability to reset the code, which will save you some time. You'll then have to drive the vehicle for a while (how long varies between vehicles, but around 20 miles, or 20 minutes, or something of that nature), before the computer will complete all of its checks.

One free check that you can do is to make sure that the gas cap is on tight. If it is not (sometimes they need to click 3 times), it will turn on your check engine light. After you tighten it, it will take a number of on/off cycles before it shuts off.

If Engine runs fine why does check engine test says Faulty camshaft sensor 1999 silhouette?

A vehicles engine can run and operate just fine with a bad sensor dependin on wich one it is.. In your mini-van the cam shaft sensour is going bad.. and giving incorrect readings to the engine.

What you may consider running fine and what the engine considers, can be to really different things.

Like having hiccups.. your alright nothing wrong.. but something inside the body isn't quite working properly

Check engine light comes on and why does the car loses power?

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

How do you reset a check engine light in a Suzuki jimny?

To reset a check engine light in a Suzuki Jimny, one suggestion is to disconnect the negative battery cable for 5-10 minutes in order to reset the light.

Why does the check engine light stay on in your 2006 Chevy Silverado?

The light is on because the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool to retrieve the code that has been set. This code will tell you what part is being effected.

How do you check the system malfunction light?

If you are asking to see if it works, then get out the handbook and look under the fuse section. Then what you want to do is locate the fuse for the control panel and emergency check engine lights. In most cars the cigarette lighter and the panel are on the same fuse. Check the fuse to see if it is blown. A blown fuse will be dark in color or appear to look broken inside. If it is blown, then you need to replace it with the same strength of fuse that you take out. If this is not what you asked then please be more specific. If you are asking about a system malfunction light in general, then please include the make, model, and yr of the vehicle, as they are somewhat different by type of vehicle.

How do I correct the Check engine light on my 1998 Mazda 626 with the code of p0171?

Hi, I have the same problem with my 2000 Mazda 626. Still working on the problem, but I found this helpful:

http://www.aa1car.com/library/problem_hesitation.htm

DIAGNOSTIC TIPS FOR P0171 OR P0174 LEAN TROUBLE CODES A code P0171 or P0174 (or both) indicate the engine is running lean. This means there is too much air and/or not enough fuel. If you have a scan tool that can display Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT), you can confirm the engine is running lean by looking at the STFT at idle. If STFT is greater than about 10 to 12, the engine is running LEAN. Increase engine speed to 1600 to 2000 rpm and hold for a minute or so, then recheck the STFT value. If it has dropped 3 or 4 points or more, the lean problem is due to a vacuum leak (vacuum leaks have more of an impact on the idle fuel mixture than the cruise mixture). If the STFT valve is still the same, the problem is probably sensor-related (dirty or bad MAF sensor, or bad MAP sensor), or is due to low fuel pressure. The next steps would be to use the scan tool to look at the airflow and MAP sensor readings, and to check fuel pressure. A lean fuel condition can be caused by:

* Low fuel pressure due to a weak pump or leaky fuel pressure regulator. (use a fuel pressure gauge to check fuel pressure at idle)

* Dirty fuel injectors. (try cleaning the injectors)

* Vacuum leaks at the intake manifold, vacuum hose connections or throttle body. (Check for vacuum leaks)

* Leaky EGR valve. (Check the operation of the EGR valve)

* Leaky PCV Valve or hose. (Check valve and hose connections)

* Dirty or defective Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF). (Try cleaning the MAF sensor wires or filament with aerosol electronics cleaner. Do NOT use anything else to clean the sensor, and do not touch the sensor wires)

* TIP: On many Fords, a P0171 and/or P0174 Lean Code may sometimes appear because of a bad Differential Pressure Sensor (DPFE). This sensor monitors EGR flow, and is located on the engine near the EGR valve. There are two hoses that connect the sensor to the tube that runs from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve. The sensor misreads EGR flow and the computer increases EGR which has a leaning effect on the fuel mixture. The fix is to replace the DPFE sensor.

* TIP: For information about other causes of P0171 and P0174 lean codes on Ford Windstar, Click Here

REPAIRS Repairs will depend on what is causing the hesitation. If the cause is fuel related, it may require cleaning the fuel injectors or fixing a vacuum leak. If the cause is ignition related, it may require replacing the spark plugs and plug wires
