This might not be an improvement to the previous answers but take it for what it is. I have the same care and year. The check engine light had been coming on for a couple of days or weeks and then going off..I noticed a lot of things on that car changed because of a temperature rise or fall outside..which seemed dumb to me.( I mean except if there was no coolant)

i went to Advanced Auto and asked them to run codes (they do it free)...the code came back as bad o2 sensor. I left drove home and of course the light was out by then.

I found out that this is a common problem for the car. The check engine light is on. but is the computer checking the check engine light??? Anyway it was time for Emissions and I took it.

.I thought the girl was going to do the test with the thing they put in the tail pipe and what i had experienced before. The check engine light came on when I was in line( note there was no problem I could feel or smell in this car in as long as I driven it knowing the check engine light was a problem)..So the girl does something but nothing with the tailpipe..remember light on ..she is running codes and fails me. I got out of the bay and the light went off..so I figured you know what..I turned around went back through the line and passed 2 minutes later.Take it for what it is..but I think the check engine light needs to check itself.

Try disconnecting battery for about 10 mins. If this doesn't work , have vehicle scanned to see if there is a problem, if not have codes cleared

Yes, you will need an analog multi meter (the one with a needle) I bought one from wal mart for about $8. Underneath the driver side dash is a fuze box, right next to it should be a white module that's open and has 12 pins sticking out of it. Connect the red lead to the one on the top left #1 and the black one on the bottom right #12--watch the meter needle--it will move slow (sweeps) that is representative of a number, then it will stop and then start to sweep fast--count all of the sweeps-slow and fast. You need a book to tell you what the codes mean. There's a website (316 garage) there is a ton of info on there.

If yours is on, it could be many many things...but I recently had mine come on because the thermostat was out/going out of it. I took it to my local auto-zone, they will do a free scan and give you a good idea of where the problem lies.

Like I said, my 2004 envoy's check engine light was on because of the thermostat, after driving it for 10 or 15 minutes (enough to get it warmed up) the temperature gauge would only reach about 180. After having the thermostat replaced it now gets to 210 degrees-where it should be.

On a 2003 Tundra it is located on the lhs near the bottom of the cluster more too the centre of the cluster as well... This should be a quarter turn socket and bulb assembly... Cluster is easily removed from the dash. This process should not take much more then 10 to 15 minutes to perform. Common tools required to complete the task...

If the code indicates an O2 sensor, that does NOT always mean the O2 sensor is bad. It could indicate that your fuel mixture is too rich. Lack of air from a dirty filter causes a rich mixture because the computer doesn't know the filter is dirty. This in turn results in O2 sensor readings that turn on the check engine light.

If your air filter is very dirty, just replace it and reset the check engine light and see if it stays off.

the question doesn make sense but if you mean why does my engine light stay on when my car is started it means there is a problem in the engine whuch needs to be looked at by a mechanic

Disconnect negative battery cable for about 5 minutes. The light will just come back on if you have not repaired the problem that set the light in the first place.

or it could be the control module in the distributor.

unfortunally your question have to many answers .And Its impossible to give you the right answer. First of all . Check engine light come on when your car starting to have a problem and their is so many things that can cause the check engine light to come on. What to do first : # 1 hook up your scanner into your car which will be 0BD II and pull out some code o codes first . and than each code mean what kind of problem you car is experimenting. One or more sensors in the van has detected a fault in something. You can take it to a NAPA store and they can scan the ECM to find out which troubles codes have been set.

It means that your relay is out, and has to be replaced with a new one, and once its been replaced, your check engine light will turn off in about 20 minutes or so.
