Whether it's the sparkplug , the coil , the fuel mixture etc. causing it to misfire has to be determined

It means the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system.

Purchase an inexpensive coolant tester from your local auto parts store. When the engine is cold, either remove the radiator cap and draw a sample out or open the petcock drain and let a little coolant out into a clean cup for a sample. Use the tester to see what the coolant will protect the engine from freezing.

You repair whatever caused it to fail inspection and retest it after the repair is made.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 minutes.

On a lot of late model vehicles, made in the last 10 years, that will no longer work. You will need access to a scan tool to reset the check engine light. Also, if the cause of the light has not been repaired, the light will come back on.

Try disconnecting the battery terminals and let sit for a minute or two. Then reconnect and start vehicle! This should reset the computer and the check engine light should be off! If this does not work try disconnecting again and let sit for a longer period of time!

if it is the 4.6 V8 - it is located under the glove box on the passenger side. The plug-in code reader will work & tell you what is wrong. Took mine to Auto Zone - they did it or free but I had to tell the dude where it was, as he was walking toward the drivers side.

It is a non manufacture specific diagnostic machine that communicates to the computers on a vehicle and displays any failure codes.

It could, if it is plugged and the code has to do with fuel sytem lean. Suggest you have code checked, and check fuel pressure.

If the cause of the code is not repaired, erasing it will not do any good.

Check gas cap and all hoses from the engine to the gas tank.

Possibly, if the alternator is driven by that belt and it is setting a voltage code.

I have a 1997 neon and I reset mine by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. I hope this works for you. I have a 2005 Dodge Neon and I found out and know for sure how to do it you have to remove the fuel pump fuse that is under the hood cause the pcm runs through that fuse always

MIl light comes on as a result of any fault with the engine's Euro functioning. It can be any of the sensors or the heated oxygen sensor or even the ERG valve. When the MIL comes on cranking the engine wont help but sometimes when the fault is minimal, the engine may start but it wont be smooth. Also, the pollution norms wont be met. It is best to carry the vehicle to a local mechanic who has an Euro On board testing tool to decode the error, which is stored in the ECM of the car. One of the newer OBDII (On Board Diagnostic revision 2) code scanners will allow you to reset the light and it will help you figure out what's wrong at other times too. They are well worth the cost. If the gas cap is the only problem, then once it's replaced, it should take about 2 to 3 days for the light to go out. If it doesn't go out automatically, then take it back to the dealer or get one of these OBDII's. This information is actually in the owner's manual.

Take it to a professional and have the computer scanned for the fault code. The computer has detected a problem with the emissions system. I own a 1995 Geo Prism and i just finished taking care of this problem. The engine light usually means either your battery or alternator is not operating properly. I am a member of AAA auto club so I used up one of my 4 towing allowances for the year to have them do a no cost check of my battery and alternator. Their analizer showed that my alternator was not putting out enough juice and as a result it was draining on my battery whenever I was using the car. 1993-1997 Prisms have Delco GM or a Toyota Nippon (the word has more letters to it but I forget them) brand alternator. Miner needed the Delco brand so I had to spend $243.00 to have a rebuilt alternator replaced. Going on line I have found out that these years of Prisms have a lot of alternator break downs. This is my second alternator replacement. The only other two items I have ever replaced are the starter and radio. Otherwise the car has been an excellent auto. I have 89,000 miles on it. Take it to your dealer. It can mean that you have a bad sensor which measures air polution. I've had three Fords that have had that problem. They usually put in a new sensor. You cannot turn it off yourself and shouldn't try.

That's the computer's way of telling you that something is wrong and it wants you to read the diagnostic code.
