Really depends on model year, and what specifically the light is. If it's the stop engine light, then a fault has been detected which will cause the engine to shut down. On older trucks with mechanical engines, a stop light typically meant that inadequate air pressure is in the system.

No, this is not true for many different types of cars. Many times, the side that the handle is on the icon does not correlate to which side the gas tank is on the car.?æ

I JUST got the diagnostic back on my car and it had the same code, P0440, come up. It means there was an evaporation leak detected. It can mean a few things could be leaking on your vehicle, down to as simple as tightening your gas cap.

Generally, a check engine light is lit when there is a problem in the emissions or somthing that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions.

It needs to set readiness. Which means you need to drive the car a certin amount of miles until the computer verifies the problem no longer exists. The problem will be in memory however you should be able to get it inspected no problem.

Don't fuel up with the engine running. The car is set up to test the intergrity of the fuel sytem for vapor leaks. The main time it will run is at idle. If it is running and you have the gas cap off, the light will come on.

Most likely the cause is a loose wire somewhere in the car's wiring harness related to the computer system that operates all of the sensors that operate on the car's engine. I had a 95 Elantra, love it went great, cheap on gas. Butone day the check engine light came on and then never left. It was always on, no apparent problems though then and 3 month later the car took fire. Total loss. Dont know if related but that's my story....

I am not sure what the question is. Error codes mean there is something not within specs for the engine to run properly. Oxygen sensor is reading too lean or too rich, tps reading too high or too low, etc. You can usually find the meaning of these codes in a repair manual for the model and year of the car. These manuals can be found in a public libary, bought at a auto parts store or a book store.

The code reader you used may not be advanced enough to read all codes or to pull stored codes. The CEL may light and then go off (even for problmes much more serious than a loose gas cap). Some codes are still stored. However, some are not. I do not think there is any rhyme or reason to this. Like most things on a Kia, the warning system is unreliable.

DON'T REMEMBER THE SPECIFICS, BUT FOUND 2 KIA SORENTOS WITH MISLABELED WIRING GOING TO THE DLC - HAD TO SWITCH WIRES INTO PINS ON DLC JUST TO MAKE IT COMMUNICATE WITH SCANNER.

you may have a bad sensor or lose sensor check to see if the wireing is rubbing on anything i belive if you have too much water in relation to antifreeze then the light wll come on, have your coolant tested at a service station to make sure you are using the correct ratio.

The only way of knowing that is to use a code reader and look up the code that you get.
