Will regular old style 305 heads work on a newer vortec 305 block?
The heads will fit the block, but the vortec intake manifold will not bolt to the old style
heads.

Are we talking about a 1997 - 3.1L OHV engine here? If so, it's a two step operation. First step is tighten the bolts to 89 in-lbs Second step is rotate the bolts an additional 30-degrees. Make sure that as you're tightening the bolts that the pushrods are sitting properly in the rocker arms and that the tabs on the bottom of the rocker arm pedestals are seating properly in the grooves milled in the head.

How do you remove the smog pump from a third Gen Camaro 305-350 rochester 4bbl Engine?
3rd gen cars, using air pump and serpentine belt 87-92.
1. remove belt stock one
2. 3 bolts on front of bell of air pump take out remove pulley and wheel.
3. remove air pump and air hoses behind pump.
4. cut with saw all air tubes closest to manifolds as possible. Remove all air tubes over motor and plastic pump parts above and behind AC pump area associated with air pump.
5. long socket. remove tube ends from manifolds.
6. take tube end out of manifold to hardware store, ask for plumbers plug cast iron for the manifolds as plugs, need 8.
7. Install plugs.
8. If done right now take off ac off bracket and remove air / ac bracket. cut off areas of pump if you wish so has no appearance ever being there optional.
9. WITH air pump off go to local junk yard, buy the VORTEC v6 belt off a JIMMY by GMC or chevy pickup. the Vortec belt fits in place of camaro or firebird or caprice or roadmaster with no air pump.
10. you CHECK light will come on. if you hot rod this motor then remove O2 censor wire, etc, and all computer from motor. NOTE DO NOT remove tranny wires, computer runs a 2 brain way. leave computer to tranny running. Remove check bulb from dash.
11. Recommend running CARB now not TBI or TPI. Headers can also be used now. and NO plugs will be needed. Camaro parts Minneapolis MN if need help, craigslist ads

The 1990 Chev 305 and 350 did not use a timing belt. They used a timing chain, and unless something really odd happened, you should never need to replace the timing chain until you rebuild the engine.
Did u try to change the fuel filter or leave the gas cover off and see if that helps.

yes you can. pretty much every chevy trans has the same bolt patern. you will just need a transfer case that will bolt up with a passenger drop for the front axle.
