There's a little black servo motor on the right side of the steering column (a little below the bottom of the dash) which releases a cable when you press on the brake. When you release the brake, the cable will get sucked back in (if it's working properly). Mine was burned out, so I disconnected the power to the motor, pulled the cable out and fastened it so it was always disengaged, and now I can always shift out of park (probably even if my foot is off the brake, but who cares unless you have kids who meddle with your car).

You should get 20+ mpg on the high-way(50mph,80kph). If not then its probably the winter gas which always results in 10-15% lower mileage. Otherwise its time for a tuneup and new O2 sensor or new catalytic.
