Yes, it does. I know, because mine is faulty on my Chevy Malibu and it was just replaced. My car would shut off at stop lights and even when driving down the road. Actually the answer to the original question is NO, the camshaft sensor does not replace the crankshaft sensor. On my 98 Malibu I have a camshaft sensor, a 7x crank sensor and a 24x crank sensor. My Malibu is not starting, we've tested the crank sensor and replaced the computer and still no fire to the plugs. The ignition module has been tested and it's good. There have been a lot of discussion about the Passlock system, but I reset that, now I'm turning towards the camshaft sensor which is suppose to control the fuel and the tach, but there may be other interactions with the computer that keeps it from firing the ignition system. The only indication the camshaft sensor is bad is I get no reading from the tach no the dash or from my OBDII computer reader. My book says the computer uses both crank and camshaft sensor when firing the injectors, but if the plugs don't fire, the injectors aren't the problem and I sprayed starting fluid in the intake and no joy.

Usually, knocking indicates bad bearings on the crankshaft. You are going to have to budget for a rebuild on the bottom end of the engine. If the engine has extreme mileage, you would be better off with a remanufactured engine.

your best bet is to get a used motor or if you have the money then buy a new one but either way they are kind of spendy. the cheapest motor i have found was used and priced at $500

A smeel of burning oil can be two ways- A leak that runs down the engine and heated up - Cooking the residue off- clean the engine -could be some small amounts of smoke like a light fog around compartment and engine at stop, The other smell of oil can come from burning internally - you would have white to blue smoke out of tail pipe- you've seen trucks and some busses do this . you smell it too - it's harder to breath than the small oil leak on the engine block - you may have other fluids spewing on engine to burn off as well - oil is brown/ clear - transmission is red . If unsure what fluid =put paper or cardboard down to catch leaks - it will also let you concentrate on a specific area if it is not clearly visible.

It is in the passenger side coolant tank on the radiator. If the light is on and the coolant is at the proper level then the sensor is defective. To replace it you will have to drain the radiator. Disconnect the wire and remove the clip and remove the sensor.
