In 1950 the population in Vietnam (north & south together) was approximately 29 million people. In 1959, it was approximately 33,000,000 people.

After the World War I, the United States emerged as one of the world's leading countries, both in military and economy fields. Assuming an ever greater role in the world's events, the US found itself having more and more enemies, be it due to economical or political reasons - which, one might argue - lead to the formation of NATO, US involvement in Korean War and both the World War II and the Cold War.

There was never, and never will be, a decade in which everyone is "happy".

Money and jobs (employment) were geared up to fight communism.

The US M1 Garand rifle served in WWII and Korea and was replaced by the M14 Service Rifle in about 1957 and fought in only one war...Vietnam. The M14 rifle served in Vietnam all the way up to about 1968, by which time all units in Nam were using the M16 Jungle Rifle. US forces thru-out the free world retained the M14 Rifle until about 1970 or so.

The proto-types of the future M16 (called the AR-15) were developed in about 1957, but the US military didn't purchase any of them during the '50s. The M16 first went to South Vietnam as an experiment in 1961/62, then issued as a "Jungle Rifle" in 1963; then as a standard issue US Rifle by 1967/1968.

In the 1950's, the development of suburbs caused a split in the levels of living in the US. The "middle class" moved to the suburbs to have schools teaching to a level of education they were happy with. The inner city was left to the lower level population, the poverty that had to take the education they were given, which was not much. The money for new schools went to the newer "suburbs" and the city got very little which reflected in the level of education in the cities.

Secondarily, it created a lot of new capitalistic opportunities to serve the mass population growth in the suburbs. A growth that has never stopped. One can drive down a main street in any city and notice the shopping coming further out the road each year. The tentacles of capitalism will eventually come to your neighborhood.

Some would say that is great, within walking distance so no fossil fuel is used, stimulates getting exercise; all positive things when you think about it. Others would say it is taking up open spaces and green spaces along the highway and polluting the air with the pavement and buildings.

Whatever your opinion, suburban sprawl is consistent and will continue for the foreseeable future.

We can now observe the McCarthy witch hunt with the perfect clarity of hindsight, however, it was not that simple at the time. It was true that the USSR was the enemy of the US and had active agents within the US, although as it turns out, none of the people targeted by McCarthy or his allies in the House Un-American Activities Committee were actually Soviet agents. The conflict between capitalist and communist economic systems did exist, it was not imaginary, but the strategy of responding to this threat was frequently wrong. McCarthy did not consider his statements to be unbelievable and neither did large numbers of Americans who supported him, including Richard Nixon, one of the early crusaders against communist infiltration, who later was elected to two terms as President, although he also resigned in his second term. McCarthyism tapped in to a certain element of paranoia in the American public. There are today still people who claim that Barack Obama does not legally qualify to be President, which is just the latest version of the same paranoia.

Minority groups struggled greatly in the 1950's. Segregation was the main struggle with African Americans in the 50's. They could not go to school with the whites or even use the same water fountains.

There were no infant car seats in 1956 to speak of. There were attempts to make an infant seat but there were never sold in any quantities. In fact there were no seat belts in 1956 except on the Ford which installed seat belts that year for the first time. No other American manufacture installed them that year. Safety was not a concern at that time.
